While I was in SC demonstrating outside a McCain event, I confronted Senator Tom Coburn on his endorsement of McCain. Coburn has been very good on immigration. He said that he has the personal promise from McCain that he will not support amnesty. I told him that such a promise is worthless given McCain's record. Coburn responded that if McCain violated his promise, he would fight "tooth and nail" to stop any amnesty bill in the Senate. I replied that the Senate passed an amnesty bill in 2006 in a Rep controlled Senate and now the Dems are in charge.
Many of McCain's endorsements from conservatives like Coburn and Thune come from McCain calling in his chips from his efforts supporting their campaigns.
