other GOP Senators. They LOATHE him

I can't figure out why Phil Gramm is backing McCain.

Gramm was one of the most conservative of GOP Senators. What's up with that?

Everyone loathed Phil, too. McCsin has cussed out every member of the Senate. Dumb.

My guess is that Phil Gramm is backing the 1980 version of John McCain as are many other Reagan era officials. At one time, McCain was a good senator and a strong supporter of Reagan. He was a worthy heir to Goldwater's seat.

But somewhere along the line, he got seduced by favorable press, the power of Washington and the limelight of poking conservatives in the eye to get praised by liberals.

With Romney, there is the possibility that a persistently hostile press will actually encourage him to do the right thing. With McCain, it is exactly the opposite-- a fawning press will encourage him to do the wrong thing-- McCain-Feingold being the best example.

Gramm probably remembers McCain back 20 years ago when they were both conservative. Gramm left the senate in 2002. He must not be paying attention to what McCain has done since then.
