FRED THOMPSON, IN OR OUT? (Mother in hospital)
PowerLine ^ | January 19, 2008

Posted on 01/19/2008 8:07:10 PM PST by restornu

Fred Thompson just spoke to his supporters in South Carolina, where he appears headed for a weak third or fourth place finish. Thompson thanked everyone and then spoke about America and conservatism's contribution to it. He did not talk about Florida or being in the race to stay.

Word is that Thompson will return to Tennessee to visit his mother in the hospital. While he's there, presumably, he'll consider his options. Frankly, and I say this with regret, it's difficult to see the case for him remaining in the race.

Stick with it to the end, and take your delegates to the convention, where you will become the nominee.

In a brokered convention, I think he gets the nod. Just my optimistic opinion.

Correct, Reno. Now is the time to get behind Romney. He’s the only man who can stop McCain, and he’s the only man who can beat Hillary or Obama in November. He needs the support of conservatives to do all that.

There is no such thing as a sure thing. He may not turn out to be as conservative as FReepers would like. But, then again, he may. It’s a bet worth taking, when you look at the alternatives realistically.

McCain, Obama, and Hillary are proven leftists.

none of the annointed ones will beat her.

You may think so, and you may be correct. However, it is no reason to role over & write in a name. The Dems will be united in the end. They see a huge difference between all of their candidates and all of ours. What they see is real. They see it clearly because they have been out of the White House for eight years.

So clever you are. Now, if you could only come up with a thought to go along with your emotions, you could almost be relevant yourself.

Because he would be the easiest to beat in the general

Nope, because he really likes him.

Actually you maybe onto something, though a little more subtle.

Thompson as the RNC “fail safe” for McCain...

He has the support from some pretty strong GOP players.

McCain's stability is of great concern in the halls of power in the GOP...

I need to check this idea out...

What I don’t understand should Fred leave how can any true conservative support McCain who has for decades back stab his own party some here must be a closet Democrat!

Do you remember in 2006 the big issue was borders and yet many got in trouble for being to enthusiastic there was another issue that also got slam for being on the enthusiastic table!

some protest too much!

I have seen no reason for Fred to pull out yet. This thing is very fluid.

I completely agree with you and so does this voter from York, SC

What voters said

“(Thompson is) the only one that’s not a pathological liar. I did a lot of checking out of things on the Internet, looking at sites. I have friends who are die-hard politicians. I weighed in on what they had to say. I don’t know if Fred will win. I voted for the guy who’s probably going to lose, but he’s still the best guy.” - Owen Watts, 59, York

Our electorate is being brainwashed by the same apathy that has always attempted to crucify goodness.

Conservatism and “first principles” is about so much more than just politics.

Both McCain and Huckabee are one mere ill-advised statement away from meltdown (actually Huck has already made several but the MSM is holding back in case he wins the general.

Fred will be Mc Cains Running Mate

That is unfortunatley the only way McCain could win.

I don’t see similar calls for Rudy to drop out, and he hasn’t even registered?

He will if he loses Florida. Everyone was patient with Fred until he lost South Carolina. He put the line in the sand there not anyone else. Rudy put the line in the sand at Florida.

In general the “hanging with while he’s still hanging on” philosophy risks McCain getting Florida. Stopping McCain in Florida is the most important goal, and that won’t happen voting for a candidate who:

1) Cannot win because he has no ability to compete in major media markets in the big states Feb 5

2) Is splitting the anti McCain vote, much too dangerously in Florida

3) Cannot do anything in a brokered convention because in 850 million dollar races the big donors will not tolerate elevating a 50 delegate candidate over a 1000 delegate candidate. And 50 delegates doesn’t buy a VP slot over a 500 delegate candidate. If his glowing principles are to be the reason to be VP, he gets that with or without 50 delegates. So . . . there’s no upside to risking McCain in Florida

In the final analysis it is all about last year. The enormous earthquake of conservative rage at McCain’s Amnesty Bill was the single most profound act of the right wing anger since the 2000 attempt by Gore to steal Florida.

To act now in any way that REWARDS McCain for his treachery last year — for his literal sneering in the face of conservatism — renders that entire event last year nothing more than mere petulance. The shouts were that “he will pay”. ANY act taken now to allow him to escape punishment defiles the dignity of last year’s victory.

And so, the choice is clear. It is not one of voting FOR Romney which is a concept the Thompson folks won’t want to fully embrace. It is, rather, one of honoring last year’s effort and punishing the perpetrator.

Because the person who posted this thread is a big Romney fan and hopes the last conservative drops out so it can be the battle of the sappy moderates.

BINGO!
This also could be part of a “ backup” in case McCain does not come unglued in time. Fred in ready reserve...
