Despite a disappointing finish, Thompson doesn't bow out
Chicago Tribune ^ | Jan. 19, 2008 | William Douglas

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson didn't drop out of the Republican presidential field after his disappointing finish in Saturday's South Carolina primary -- but he sounded close to it.

About an hour after the polls closed, Thompson addressed a ballroom in a college student union, an event that featured as many students enjoying free beer as it did hardcore Thompson supporters. He delivered a lengthy soliloquy, speaking in the past tense about "clear conservatism," the cornerstone of his campaign.

"My friends, we will always be bound by a close bond because we have traveled a very special road together for a very special purpose," Thompson told the crowd. "It's never even been about me, it's never been about you. It's been about our country."

Thompson's campaign declined to say whether the speech was a concession, a swan song, a stump speech to signal that he's fighting on, or what. Campaign spokesmen wouldn't say what the former Tennessee senator's next move is.

"The campaign is still a campaign until it's not the campaign," said Rich Galen, a Thompson campaign senior adviser. "There's no hurry to make a decision, other than your deadline. I don't have anything to add -- not tonight."

Thompson conceded earlier Saturday that he needed a win in South Carolina to keep his presidential campaign alive.

“my take is...the MSM/DBM have their agenda....their agenda is to get RAts in office....so its 24/7 about Hitlery and Bama and only the Pubs that will never get elected get any air time”

You are absolutely right. I was just talking to a friend, who made the same observation.

The hope would be that Mitt can be pinned down to be constrained to appoint conservative SCOTUS and lower level judges.

More like a schoolgirl's fantasy. You know how dearly Ivy-educated politicians love to "rise above".

Then Caroline Kennedy gives them a Profile in Courage plaque.

The only way now to prevent the rinos McCain or Giuliani from getting the nomination is for Huckabee and Mitt to drop out and get behind the only all around consistent conservative in in the race that can pull all three legs of the Reagan coalition back together, FRed Thompson!

My hope now is that we go to the GOP Convention with no candidate with enough delegates to claim the nomination and the the party turns to Fred for the just that very reason.

Bigots like Dobson want to elect a Protestant Pope, not a President. What their bigotry will get them is either McCain, Romney, Clinton, or Obama. That’s all that’s left!

I know what Dobson said in a private email. He expressed his gut feelings to friends and aquaintances just like all of us do. Comments like yours and others and Thompson's playing to that part of his base hurt him. He would have been wise to either downplay the leaked email or try to reach out to Dr. Dobson to assure him of his beliefs. Instead he dissed a man who is well liked by millions of people all around the world. Not a good move especially when he then goes out to court the "value voters".(whatever that means)

G. W. Bush didn't.

“The GOP can go hang. They no longer represent my ideals, and I refuse to support someone just because they don’t have a D by their name.”

Enjoy 8 years of President Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Bogey-men everywhere. Boo!!!

Yep. Dobson is just one more guy who’s shown his true colors. Two guys I once held in huge esteem have recently collapsed in my estimation: James Dobson and Brit Hume. They had me fooled, but not anymore. They both let me down.

Oh, man ... reading those numbers just gets my blood boiling at the lack of ethics in America's news rooms. Those people ought to be ashamed of themselves, downright sheepish and with their tails tucked between their legs. They are frauds when they call themselves "newsmen."

Absolute frauds.

Thompson did all of this -- stayed ahead of Giuliani, BEAT Romney, BEAT McCain -- Fred Thompson beat Romney and McCain -- after being in the campaign for four months! And the others had spent a year-plus man-hours and millions of dollars! Thompson waltzes in there and does this in four months.

If that's not newsworthy, then snow is not cold and Oprah Winfrey isn't black.

And those lying, cowardly, slimy, FRAUDULENT "news professionals" in the MSM, including FOX News and all the major newspaper wires -- leave Thompson out of their news reports on the primaries!!!

They should all be tarred and feathered, damn them to hell.

I know what Dobson said in a private email.

Dobson meant for that email to go public. He wanted to cut Thompson's legs off at the knees. James Dobson has become a slimy, manipulative "king-maker" in evangelical circles. We had a lunch today with people from our church and they were discussing the pearls of wisdom that Dobson had been letting drip from his lips this week and how he could now suuport Mike Huckabee. I gagged on my lunch and kept quiet (other than saying I would have to hold my nose to vote for Huckabee and the room got uncomfortably silent for a bit). I will never give another dollar to that pontificating self-important, self-righteous judgmental fool Dobson.

ExCUSE me??? You're saying that Thompson should be the one to reach out to DOBSON?

No, sir. Dobson is the one who squeezed this pile, he should be the one to clean it up. You should know that. More so the point, so should he.

Fred Thompson and James Dobson have something in common. Neither one of them is going to be elected president.

Enjoy 8 years of President Hillary Rodham Clinton.

It's a pretty good gamble from my point of view that you are WRONG -- odds are way the other way that:

-- Hillary won't even get the nomination

-- If Hillary gets the nomiation, it will be by fraud and therefore her "base" would be illusion, MSM cheerleading notwithstanding, dooming her to failure

-- Either Hillary or Obama will be extremely weak opponents, as both of them have very serious problem with their images and records -- even a mediocre Republican could defeat them

-- IF either Hillary or Obama won, it would probably be by FRAUD, more than likely by FRAUD. Therefore, their base would be illusion. Either would face the same rejection as Gray Davis in California. Their presidencies would be short-lived, unpopular, and the damage either would do to the Democrat party would make Nixon's scandal-aftermath on the Repulican party look like spilled water.

Your whole premise is flawed, IMO.

That you even post the sentiment says a lot about you and possibly a lot about Dobson, but nothing about Thompson or the primary. It says you’re a pill. :^)

Huckabee is the media's fav. GOP candidate...gee I wonder why. He's easily beatable, that's why.

My take on Huckabee is that he's using God and religion to sell himself. (Preaching, and then blatantly lying about the other candidates positions over and over does not show me his "faith" is real.) I will not vote for him no matter how many Biblical verses he manages to slip into his speeches. What kind of actual foreign policy experience does he have? Isn't that the kind of leader our country needs right now? Someone who knows a great deal about defense and foreign policy....like Fred Thompson. Oh, but the media will not cover Fred --because he could beat Obama and Hillary the Socialist. Huckabee can't--he's WEAK.
