Speaking of sturgeon, I just received this pic in an email from a relative in OR. Didn't have a date so I don't when it was caught.
This Sturgeon was caught on the Willamette River just below Oregon City two weeks ago. It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1". It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in. Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water. They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

Sturgeon fishing is a blast! I have only gone about ten times and have never caught a keeper because most were oversize (over 60 inches). The best time to go is toward the end of the shad run on the Columbia River in June. To hook the big ones we use whole shad about 3 pounds. My largest one I have gotten to the boat is about 7.5 feet. Most of the large ones (9-11) have eluded me after breaking me off. These amazing fish, believe it or not, will often jump clear out of the water several times during the fight. Sturgeon are an amazing sport fish.
