I’m assuming the project was begun before the Yamanaka announcement. Maybe someone will compare the reprogrammed adult cells with the cloned embryonic.
But — cloning is still mostly “just because we can do it and make money (or get patents).” (And then, there’s the added benefit that some enjoy of sticking it in the eye of pro-life believers. Alta Charo believes this proves we humans aren’t so special and hints that cloning and genetic research proves there’s no G_d.)

Im assuming the project was begun before the Yamanaka announcement. Doesn't matter. California is doing ESC research as a political statement, not for scientific knowledge.
