Court Case Could Alter Nev. Outcome

By KATHLEEN HENNESSEY Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A last-minute federal court battle over caucus rules demonstrates just how important a tight three-way Democratic presidential contest in Nevada has become in the battle for momentum headed into Super Tuesday's votes.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards are in a statistical dead heat in polling here before Saturday's caucuses. And Nevada's sizable blocs of Hispanic, union and urban voters could provide an indicator of where the race is headed on Feb. 5, when hundreds of delegates will be awarded in states with significant minority populations.

p> At issue in a federal court hearing Thursday is whether Democratic caucuses will be held in nine casinos along the Las Vegas Strip. The special locations were designed to make it easier for housekeepers, waitresses and bellhops in the state's biggest industry to caucus at midday near their jobs rather than returning home to neighborhood precincts.

The rules were unanimously approved by the state Democratic party last March and ratified by the Democratic National Committee in August.

But last Friday, six Democrats and a teachers union, which has ties to the Clinton campaign, sued to shut the sites on grounds they allocate too many delegates to one group.

The Clinton campaign has denied any involvement in the lawsuit, but Obama noted it was filed two days after he was endorsed by the powerful Culinary Workers Union Local 226, which has organized many workers along the Strip. The union is the state's largest with 60,000 members, more than 40 percent Hispanic.

Suing people isn’t going to win Hillary any friends, quite the opposite. The PR is going to be REAL bad with that play for votes.

Gives Obama all SORTS of ammunition. What in the world are Hillary’s people thinking?

Oh, yeah, the Clintons had nothing to do with it. And Kathleen Willey assaulted herself in the Oval Office.

What a shock. The rules were unanimously approved and everyone was happy. Then, when circumstances showed that it might not be beneficial, Hillary's team all of a sudden doesn't like the rules, and they want to ignore the rules in the middle of the game, or they want the rules redefined to let them win. And how do they do that? Like they've always done it. Have the courts change the rules for them! This is classic Democrat behavior!

Said Hillary: "Well, we liked the rules before. But that was then and this is NOW."

Just came back from the Dark Underworld-—they are ticked at Hillary and Obama for moving too far right and for Hillary’s Nevada nonsense. (gave me a chuckle) Anyway, while we and the media are looking at Hillary and Obama, the DUers are committing themselves to Edwards.

Hillary doesn’t want to “count all the votes”? I thought this was an “a priori sacrosanct” for Democrats.

Didn't you get the Clinton memo? Kathleen Willey IMAGINED she was assaulted in the Oval Office. But Willie was merely trying to "help her" with her "personal problems".

Some ‘rat analyst on TV yesterday was shocked and outraged that anyone, especially a fellow ‘rat, would actually go to court to make it harder for some people to vote - must’ve forgotten how often in the past his own party has sued to stop votes from being counted in all sorts of places and elections, such as military absentee ballots in Florida and California during the ‘04 presidential race......

“Gives Obama all SORTS of ammunition. What in the world are Hillary’s people thinking?”

Don’t have a link, just a rumor over the phone. Clinton isn’t worried about Obama anymore. A deal has been made, Hillary will be the nominee and Obama will be the VP. You will hear no more about drugs from the Clinton camp. There will only be tame jabs from Obama for the duration.

If things get very nasty, the source is wrong. Edwards may go off the deep end, as he is odd man out (no pun intended).

Yep. It was with the approval of the Clinton machine, that these rules were set in place. Only when BO won the endorsement of the Unions, do they think the rules are not fair.
