Whaling activists could storm Japanese ships

Whaling activists could storm Japanese whaling ships in the southern oceans following a refusal to return two of their members from a Japanese vessel.

The Sea Shepherd anti-whaling group said this morning that it was not ruling out the possibility it would break and enter on-board the Japanese whaling ship the Yushin Maru to recover their two members, Giles Lane and Benjamin Potts, who were captured on-board the Japanese ship on Tuesday night.

Jonny Vasic from Sea Shepherd told Sky News this morning that they would not discuss future tactics, but that entering the Japanese ship to recover their members was still a possibility.

“We don’t really talk about tactics... at this point we’re not ruling anything out,” Mr Vasic said.

Japan has now set conditions on the men’s release, saying the Sea Shepherd must agree to halt its protest actions when the handover occurs.

However the environmental group says this is tantamount to extortion, and they will not negotiate on condition’s of the men’s release.

“We have no intention of having someone demand from us anything that’s breaking international conservation law,”

“We don’t take demands from someone holding hostages... we want out crew members back and they need to be returned immediately,” Mr Vasic said.

“We’re saying we want our people back, and their basically not releasing our people... we’re hoping that the diplomatic avenue will work.”

Sea Shepherd said that the protests had halted the whale cull for at least four to five days, potentially savings tens of whales from slaughter.

Mr Vasic also denied that the Sea Shepherd had been ignoring calls from the Japanese to prolong the ordeal, as is alleged, and said that they had been available to take calls since the men were captured.

“That’s absolutely incorrect... there has been absolutely no attempt to contact the ship, actually we’ve been trying to contact the Yushin Maru...” he said.
