My mother has been driving for more than 20 years and she tells me that any child seen wandering in a truck stop at night will set drivers talking to find out who the kid belongs to and cops will be called if there is no parent present.
I don’t doubt that some child prostitution does happen but the number being reported is pretty extreme. Maybe the writer should look into child sex slavery in the cities.
Indeed, the majority of truck drivers are good decent people. I was one!
Criminals are a minority in practically any classification except prison inmates. That said, the minority of truck drivers that are criminals is a larger minority than in many other jobs.
Good point. This "100,000" figure seems pretty extreme and I frankly have some difficulty believing that this sort of extreme slavery of girls is anywhere near that. I don't doubt that it happens, but I just don't believe that it's anywhere near commonplace.
The truckers I've met through my life have by and large been the most salt-of-the-earth, good people. They're often fathers themselves and when they see something that's not right, they intervene and do something about it.
Pimping little girls at truck stops? It'd be like trying to be a code-pink hippie at a biker rally. Short lived.
And do you think these kids would be allowed to keep their cell phones with them? Or be given access to a phone they could use to make a long-distance call? What are you thinking of?
The article said: Cara and Stacy are recovering from their ordeal. But for hundreds of thousands of other all-American girls caught in the web of sexual slavery, the nightmare continues. They are in every city, Smith says. They are being sold at truck stops, strip joints, massage parlors and often out of homes, marketed online or on the streets. But they are our little girls. And they need our help.
Looks like the number already includes the cities.
