I don’t think that’s true. Islam is spreading in Africa, but so are various kinds of Christianity, and I believe that Christianity has been gaining greater numbers.
Of course Islam has several advantages, including their willingness to kill their opponents or convert them by violence, as well as their practice of killing anyone who tries to leave once they have been converted.
Still, Christianity appears to be winning the race.
Concerning this article, it does seem very odd that the author never mentions that Odinga promised to impose sharia law on the country if he was elected, or that his cousin Obama supported him in this project. Also that the violence was hardly just a matter of government shooting protestors; it also involved Muslims killing Christians, including burning them up inside their churches.
I haven’t been to many sub-Saharan African countries, but in the few that I have, it was my impression that Islaam was growing apace. It became common to encounter Muslims where none were before. Islaam also has an advantage in that it’s not a “white man’s religion” & appeals to radicals.
On the other hand, I’ve spent most of my life around Muslims rather than Christians, so my perception is skewed sometimes. Also, Muslims seem to be more vocal about their beliefs & more visible.
It’s certainly true that Islam is continuing to spread through Africa. For some decades, it has been a race to see which religion would win. But from the accounts I have read, Christianity seems to be doing better, on the whole, except of course in North Africa.
Here’s one excellent article in First Things on this development, if you’re interested:

One more thing. I was told that Islaam is gaining in popularity in sub-Saharan Africa because of sponsorship from oil countries of community mosques, madaaris, public works, etc.
A natural evolution, because there is a lot of oil money being contrtibuted to help it happen. I have no problems with that actually. I have lived in Muslim society in Africa.
The problem comes when the evolution takes the shape of forcing a nation under Sharia law through political machinations, as has happened in Kenya. Kenya is a parliamentary democracy. Having an Islamofascist takeover through a mionority tribe, funded with Arab oil money is hardly something that should be happening. The people do not want an oligarchy, with no separation of church and state. They are much to accustomed to having a say in how their nation is run.
Evolving towrds Islam is one thing, but having it imposed through Islamofascism, and enforced via genocide? No one should accept that, not even the Arabs who have been funding Odinga, silently watching the marches of their ancient Nubian slave trade retake their shape , just as in the days when the Arabs ran the Dar Es Salaam slave market?
Nope. They should be fought, pursued and destroyed utterly, just like they were post 9/11 by the USA.
And they will be, once the people who have helped build Kenya for 50 years rally, get together and hire a few thousand mercenaries to do so, along with the Kenyan Army.
Somalia just signed its death warrant.
Good article. Thank you.
What she doesn't examine is the violence before the Brits imposed colonialism. It was extreme, among the very groups the Brits kept divided to conquer.
Long story short, Brits come and establish colonial rule, violence goes down, Brits leave, violence goes up.
And, it's all over Africa in places the Brits weren't. Inconvenient, no?
Short summary, Africa is violent.
