WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- Greenpeace said Monday it has disrupted the Japanese whale hunt off Antarctica by chasing the fleet's whale processing factory ship out of the whaling zone.
The six-vessel fleet "scattered and ran" early Saturday when it realized the Greenpeace vessel Esperanza was "heading toward them at high speed," Greenpeace expedition leader Karli Thomas told New Zealand's National Radio.
The fleet's three whale hunter vessels "can't operate without the (factory ship) Nisshin Maru there to process the kill," she added.

This reminds me of so many westerns I’ve seen where you can’t help but root for the outlaw. Sorry.
Or, contact the French, they have a record of sinking them.
Dont be sorry.
I was rooting for the whalers too.
Oh, well. There's always nuclear energy.
Nuke the Whales!
Japan won't be thrilled with that idea. After all, look how US nuclear testing in the Pacific affected Japan.
The only time I ever cheered the French was when they
sank the “Rainbow Warrior”.
Greenpeace terrorist tactics irk the heck out of me, but I can’t support the whalers either.
All Japanese whaling is now, is a government supported giveaway program to a dying industry that should have gracefully faded away back in the 1970s.
I have lived in Japan 21 years and I have met maybe two people (both elderly men) who claim to enjoy the taste of whale meat. It used to be a staple of public school lunches in the post-war era where kids were practically tortured into gagging it down, and most of them will tell you they would rather chew rocks than eat it again.
What’s worse is that even with all the government support, most of the whale meat that is taken can’t be sold commercially. No one wants to buy it. Currently, they are either stockpiling it frozen or trying to convince public institutions to include it on their menus. With very little success.
Call Japanese whaling a traditional industry? Fine. If they want to go out in wooden ships and try to nail whales with hand-thrown harpoons, they can have at it.
Or the Japanese could ask the French for help.
” I have lived in Japan 21 years ...”
Have you beat by a year ! Ha !
Anyway , I have had kujira two or three times in 22 years , and paid for it out of my own pocket only once . If I never had it again I wouldn’t miss it . I’d rather have some chu toro or kanpachi !
I’d rather have a cheeseburger. :-)
I had whale steak once back in the 70’s. It was like the most tender and flavorful beef possible.
This is a very sore topic with my wife. She used to eat whale meat as a girl when she was growing up. She tells me that one used to be able to buy it in grocery stores in Japan the way we buy beef in grocery stores here in the USA.
It has been awhile since we discussed it, but if I recall correctly, she told me that she used to love eating whale meat when she was younger, and misses it a lot. She feels that the only reason she can no longer eat whale meat (were she still living in Japan) is because wacky western activists have dictated what they can and cannot do. She also believes, and I somewhat agree with her, that the depletion of the whale population has been greatly exaggerated by the animal rights wackos, and that whales are in fact a lot more plentiful than what the liars in greenpeace say.
From the way she tells it, many/most Japanese enjoyed eating whale meat when she was young (1960’s, 1970’s), and many were angry when “westerners” forced them to stop hunting them (I have told her that she should not lump the likes of greenpeace into the same category as “most westerners”). She is a fairly mellow person, but this topic will get her riled up fairly quickly.
You can still buy canned whale meat at any supermarket, but they don’t stock fresh whale because there is no market for it. If you want it, you have to go to a major fish market, but it is definitely available.
If she wants, I can pick up a couple of cans and send it to her. If she really likes the stuff, she is one of the very few Japanese people I know who does. Or, at least, one of the very few who will admit to it.
It’s quite simple really. If there was a market for it, you could buy it. There would be no reason for the government to stockpile the stuff in freezer warehouses.
I am not an animal rights whacko. If I was hungry and it was the only stuff available, I’d eat it. I did try it one time and practically gagged on it.
Well I would support the Japanese ships blowing the environmentalist whackos out of the water. Have the whaling ships mount a cannon or machine guns and see how far the bastards get then. The environmentalist whackos need to be shut down with force wherever they commit their terrorist acts.
Practically every county in the world objects to the whale hunt. Do the Japanese need the oil for lamps?
GreenPeace are a bunch of crazies, but I’m with them on this one. Enough with the whale hunting.
BS, this is enviro terrorism of the worst kind.
If we appease the enviro-whackos on this, what next ?
Hunting here ?
