Forty years ago would have made that abortion in 1967 and, if memory serves me correctly, abortions were performed then only to save the life of a woman. Abortion on demand didn’t get rolling until the 1970’s, a few years after the Roe vs. Wade ruling by the Supremes.
In those days the reason for most elective abortions had to due with tubal pregnancies, which are always fatal to the mother. The placenta, rather than securing a place on the wall of the womb, embeds in a fallopian tube instead.
