The Hague - Dutch armed forces Commander Dick Berlijn has announced that the two Dutch soldiers who died in Uruzgan on Saturday were killed by friendly fire. The soldiers did not realise they were firing on each other due to darkness and bad weather. Two Afghan soldiers who were killed later that evening were also shot dead by Dutch soldiers. They were mistaken for Taliban fighters because they were not in uniform. At the time, the Dutch soldiers were assisting an injured colleague whose legs will have to be amputated. The two deaths bring the Dutch death toll since the start of the mission to Afghanistan in August 2006 to 14

That is such a shame.

It is a tragic reality of war that these sort of incidents occur. It does not detract one iota from the bravery or dedication of the warriors on either side of the accident.

May they rest in peace and they be remembered with honor.
