I can forgive Fred for supporting Baker, his close friend. But any conservative from that generation knows the ACID test was ‘76 vs. Ford. Ford had his position by virtue of being a RINO since Nixon was so weak. Reagan would have been President in ‘76 but for the Freds of the world.

I see Fred as a man on the set. Watergate, Baker crony, and actor who honed his career in the Senate — leaving with a record of achievement on the scale of John Kerry.

Fred was Nixon’s defense counsel. Good job on that Fred.

Better put some ice on that, you're reaching the boiling point

For me, I just don't see's how we can take a chance on another huckster from Hope, Arkansas

“Ford had his position by virtue of being a RINO since Nixon was so weak.”

No Ford was the sitting President in 1976.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on a second. I would wager those who supported Ford over Reagan primarily did it because Ford was the incumbent, not necessarily because Ford was their ideological hero.

C'mon, folks. Cut people some slack. G.W. Bush wasn't every Republicans' cup of tea in 2004--but he was supported by most because he was the incumbent!

Reagan came close, but he lost. And when he did, he supported the Republican nominee.

I still say whoever the Republican nominee is, I will support them. ANY OF THEM WOULD BE BETTER THAN HITLERY, HUSSEIN OBAMA, OR THE BRECK GIRL!

Could be Fred is smarter than you give him credit for, neither Ford or any other Republican couldn't be elected after the Watergate scandal.
Think of him as a sacrifice to allow a better man (and atmosphere) to have a chance

Hell, I was only 15 years old at the time and knew there was no way a Republican could get elected.

I always thought Ford took one for the Gipper.

Maybe it worked out though. It has to be the right timing. Maybe if Reagan was President in ‘76, people wouldn’t have been able to appreciate his leadership abilities. We had to have a Carter before we could fully appreciate just how precious a Reagan Presidency was. Afterall, Carter sure did make a big mess of things, and it ended up working out pretty good how Reagan fixed the mess Carter made.
