I don’t care what either of them did in the 1976 or 1980 campaigns, unless it was something illegal. Then stop mentioning Reagan and Thompson in the same breath.

Supre lame-o again. When Reagan comparisons popped up earlier in the season, Thompson was the first to discount them and say no, he's not Reagan.

There is no Reagan in the race. So what. We have to pick the best in the field we have, not compare against an idealized great ex-President.

And yet, if you are asking who is the most conservative in the race considering economic, social and foreign policy ... the ranking would come out:

Hunter > Thompson > Romney > McCain > Guiliani > Huckabee

That's right. Huckabee comes out dead LAST. He's the least qualified and least conservative candidate in the race.

I’d say Huckabee is more conservative than Giuliani (which just goes to show how many different meanings “conservative” has in general use :-). And I’m not sure about McCain vs. Romney. They’re both pretty slippery. McCain’s a bat, though, and Romney doesn’t seem to be.

Hunter > Thompson > Romney > McCain > Guiliani > Huckabee

I'd put Guiliani ahead of McCain based on his record of cutting taxes in NYC while McCain initially blocked the Bush tax cuts.

Otherwise, you are spot on, except that the gulf between Romney and Guiliani is so great, I'm not sure I could make the leap. If it was McCain or the Huckster, I'm sure I couldn't!
