FRED: 'HUCKABEE SUPPORTED DEMOCRATS'
MSNBC First Read ^

Posted on 01/12/2008 1:40:02 PM PST by jaybeegee

Thompson and Huckabee sparred earlier this week after Thompson called the Arkansas governor a dirty word: "liberal." Today, speaking to reporters after a campaign event at a breakfast restaurant in North Charleston, Thompson served up another helping.

Asked to respond to Huckabee's charge that Thompson voted for Republican candidates other than conservative icon Ronald Reagan in 1976 and 1980, Thompson scoffed, "That's kind of silly." He explained his support of longtime Tennessee mentor Howard Baker before adding, "If you check the record, Governor Huckabee supported Democrats on a fairly consistent basis during his days in Arkansas politics.

"I don't think he wants to get into that discussion."

Thompson, who has thrown almost all of his campaign's resources into South Carolina in the hopes that a win in the first southern primary could buoy his campaign, says that there's "plenty of time" before next week's contest to convince voters that he's the best conservative candidate.

"We're going to have to make some fundamental decisions as which direction we want to go as a party," he said. "Whether or not we still believe in the Reagan coalition or whether or not we think we ought to go towards a more populist -- and I consider more liberal -- kind of approach."

*UPDATE* From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and Carrie Dann According to news outlets in the governor's home state, Huckabee supported Democrat Barbara Horn during a 2000 primary race for a state senate seat in southwest Arkansas. Horn subsequently beat her Democratic opponent, and the Republican she would have opposed bowed out of the race.

Could you give me a list of the main points on which Huckabee is running that you agree with?

A. Mcmaniac will implode on his own.
B. FRed’s using a building blocks strategy. When you knock out the lower and lateral ones, the whole thing collapses.
C. Like a snake, you want to make sure it’s dead!

Be patient, have faith, and enjoy the show. :)

And the metamucil crack wasn’t nasty? Go home.

It wasn’t even about Fred’s record. Fred comments about Huckabee’s record, Huckabee talks about intestines.

Hunter is a Buchananite? Could you give some details? That’s new info to me. The owner of this site might want to know that, too.

Please take the time to look at what you claim is “3rd grade” reasoning in these pieces:
http://author.nationalreview.com/?q=NDEyMg

After that, you may find this interesting:

http://www.fred08.com/Principles/PrinciplesSummary.aspx

Anyone who has heard me speak knows my firm commitment to what I call “First Principles.” These grow out of the documents of our Nation’s founding and the wisdom of the ages. They are core beliefs that guide my approach to the issues that are crucial to our Nation’s future. I believe in—

Individual Liberty . As Jefferson spelled out in the Declaration of Independence, our basic rights come from God, not from government, and that among these inalienable rights is the right to liberty. We must allow individuals to lead their lives with minimal government interference.

Personal Responsibility . The corollary to liberty is responsibility. No society can succeed and thrive for any duration unless free people act in a responsible way. All of us must take responsibility for our actions and strive to improve our own lives and to contribute to building a better society.

Free Markets . Free people are best equipped to order their own affairs, and the common interest benefits from and is improved by the aggregate success of all. We must reform our tax system, encourage investment, support entrepreneurial spirit, open markets abroad to American goods, and minimize burdensome government regulations to continue to expand the economy and bring increased wealth to all Americans.

Limited Government . Government must be strong enough to protect us, competent enough to provide basic government services, but limited by the delineated powers in the Constitution.

Federalism . Our Constitution innovatively guarantees our liberties by spreading power among the three branches of the federal government, and between the federal government and the states. In considering any action by the government, we must always ask two questions: is the government better equipped than the private sector to perform the task and, if so, what level of government (federal or state) ought to do it. Washington is not the seat of all wisdom. (More on Federalism)

Protecting our Country . The first responsibility of the federal government is to protect the nation and the American people. There is no more important task. We must have a strong and effective military, capable intelligence services, and a vigorous law enforcement and homeland security capacity.

Traditional American Values . A healthy society is predicated on belief in God; respect for all life; strong families centered on the institution of marriage—the union of a man and a woman; and self-respect and tolerance of others. While we are all free to live our lives in the pursuit of our own happiness, the government has a responsibility to respect the right of parents to raise their children and to promote the values that produce the strongest society.

The Rule of Law . We protect our liberty, secure our rights, and promote a just and stable society through the rule of law. We owe to ourselves and our fellow citizens our own adherence to the rules, but tough law enforcement and punishment for those who do not. A free and independent judiciary that interprets the law by adhering strictly to legal text and respects its limited role in our system of government is essential to our security and freedom, and we need judges who understand that role if we are to preserve our republic and freedom.

Conserving Our Nation’s Resources . Each of us is put on Earth for a limited period of time. We must always strive to ensure that the resources we use to lead our lives are here for future generations to enjoy and use as well.

We live in the greatest country on earth. We have been truly blessed. This blessing carries with it an obligation: to keep it that way and to leave this country at least as strong, prosperous, and united as when we entered it.

Fred moves

With a statement like that and your tag line, I think you should stay out of wood buildings and away from anything else that burns easily, you can never tell when that lighting might strike.

A+Bert is the poster child for why nursing homes shouldn’t have open bars. Not a bad guy, but drinking that early in the day tends to affect your posting ability.

I will not support Fred no matter what. His bad character is showing. Fred moves to the bottom below Romney and Ron Paul.

I am a staunch supporter of Huckabee, but I WILL SUPPORT WHOEVER GETS THE NOMINATION! Fred supporters constantly say just what you did, which is silly. ANY REPUBLICAN IS BETTER THAN OSAMA-BAMA OR THE HILDABEAST! That even includes, if I have to, holding my nose and voting for Abortiani, McKennedy, or Flip Romney. Besides, Fred is the more conservative than my man, Huckabee. He's just not winnable in the general election.

Fred is no longer for CFR, and said it was a mistake before he declared his 'testing the waters'.

How about the illegal coddling in Arkansas? Has Huckabee admitted he was wrong? No, he just denies it ever really happened. Like:'It was democrats holdovers; it was the press; it was a misquote'. Huck is full of excuses among other things.

I always thought “pro-life liberal” was an oxymoron until Huckabee came onto the stage.
