Looks like the Chinese will eventually take back Taiwan without firing a single shot.

The KMT is Taiwan's conservative party and more anti-mainland than the DPP. The DPP is much cozier with communists.

Uh.... not at all... The DPP is pro-independence, the KMT is not. Just because the KMT is conservative means very little, especially looking at China's current pro-business leadership. The Chinese would much rather have a conservative but technically non-independent Taiwan (Republic of China), than a pinko liberal "Republic of Taiwan."

Think of it this way: the KMT is a Chinese party, the DPP is an indigenous Taiwanese party. And the KMT wants to do business in China. It's a no-brainer. Unless the KMT has the balls to actually threaten the Communist Party's grip on the mainland, the mainland will prefer the KMT over the pro-independence DPP hands down.
