Huckabee Defends Joke About Fred
cbsnews ^ | 01/12/08 | Joy Lin

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Asked about Fred Thompson’s “hatchet” attack against him at Thursday's Republican debate, Mike Huckabee joked to Joe Scarborough that he thought “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”

On the bus with reporters on Route 96 in Michigan from Lansing to Grand Rapids, Huckabee explained his Metamucil comment saying, “You have to understand the context of the show….It’s not quite as irreverent as Imus…not quite Stephen Colbert but it’s serious topics with an edge.”

“I really do believe if people can’t have some sense of humor as they approach this stuff, then it causes everybody to be so locked down and consultant driven that their campaigns become so boring because all they’re going to do is give this robotic answer to everything that’s very carefully scripted. I promise you, you won’t have moments like this,” Huckabee said, gesturing to the handful of reporters that had gathered around him for an on-the-record conversation that would last about 40 minutes.

“Does Romney do these?” Huckabee asked the reporters. No, replied one. Neither does Thompson, said another.

“If I thought I couldn’t be a human being. That I gotta wait till six handlers tell me what I can and can’t say and I have to read it, you know, it’s not worth it.”

How stupid is it for a politician to offend old people?

How is he going to defend that to his Mexican consulate?

I'm sure he already gave 'em a wink. His new-found border policy might last beyond Inauguration Day, but not by much.

In 2003, on a visit to Mexico, Mike Huckabee asked Vicente Fox to establish a consulate in Arkansas. Huckabee even arranged discount office space in a state office: just $1 per year.

Since the consulate openes, it’s passed out countless “Matricula Consular” ID cards to illegal aliens. Those cards help illegal aliens send billions of dollars back home, helping to prop up the corrupt Mexican government. And, their consul even encouraged civic leaders to advocate for illegal immigration.

Even the New York Times has alluded to Mexico overstepping its bounds, and the FBI has called those ID cards a security risk.

Huck is a nasty/nice. Someone who says really unkind things but says them with a smile and so expects others to let them pass.

Exactly!

It took me several months to see this about Huckabee, but the passive-aggressive behavior keeps adding up.

No better way to stoke the ire of one's enemies.

Let’s see— willful illogic. How can anyone help someone who will not see? You’ll have to work out your own problems.

huckabee is not a liberal.

He's pro-gun and anti-abortion. That makes him about 1/4 conservative. To call the remaining 3/4ths of his policies and beliefs "liberal" might be too kind.

Love your tagline mombonn. I wish I was that clever, then I would be the family wit instead of the family dunce.

“Huck is a nasty/nice.”

He is the classic case of the do as I say not as I do version of a Christian. He is the dangerous kind, which has a tendency to megalomania, especially the omnipotence part.

I know the type as I went to school with a lot of future Baptist ministers and some exhibited the sane symptoms.

Huck is a nasty/nice.
I really do like the way you put that. It's so quotable. And so true.

“HUCKABEE
The Republican Bill Clinton.”

You know, I initially liked the guy since he is a preacher, but I now have the same distrustful feeling about Huck as I did (and have) about Clinton, all the late night talk show wisecracks, etc., maybe it is the Arkansas connection?

I love Huckabee’s personality! All of us better wake up to the fact that issues are very important, but are null and void if we can’t sell them (witness Bush for the last 7 years?). Huckabee and Giuliani are the only ones with the personality to beat Hitlery or Obama Hussein in the uneducated general electorate; of those I’m hoping for Huckabee.

Why is there so much hatred for Huck on this sight?

I can only speak for myself, not anyone else on this "sight" (site).

Huckabee is as phony as a three dollar bill.

If this were 1850 he would be selling snake-oil as medicine.

Huckabee flip-flops as much as Flipper.

Huckabee has as much sincerity as Eddie Haskell in stripes.

Do you realize how much FREE media Huckabee gets?
***No I don’t. I don’t follow his campaign all that closely.

If Huckabee fizzles, his followers will be looking for another prolife evangelical to fill the void. Hunter fits that bill, no one else in the race is evangelical.

The GOP doesn’t get it. They need to let this faction find a home. The amount of invective aimed at evangelicals is surprising, but then everyone wants their votes.

Huckabee has surged because he won a couple of debates and he’s got evangelical support. If a quick rise can happen to the liberal pro-life evangelical Huckster, it can happen to the conservative pro-life evangelical Hunter.

Prolife evangelicals will be very comfortable in Hunter’s camp, since he’s a prolife evangelical staunch conservative.

“That’s Huck’s secret. Do you realize how much FREE media Huckabee gets?”

Selling your soul to the liberal media looks free now, but selling your soul usually requires a payment at a later date.
