If he could swim to the fisherman's boat why could he not swim back to the boat he voluntarily left. Perhaps those in the other boat would not let him get back in??????

He may have been too tired or cold to make it back — he used up all of his energy/adrenalin getting there. Or the other boat had drifted farther way than when he first jumped in. He may not have been that good of a swimmer in the first place. I’m sure that a few other possibilities exist.
