Roy Hobbs. Up-and-comer, women chase after him, he lets those women catch him, she shoots him, he disappears for a while.
Then he comes back like a “knight” in shining armor to save his team. He wants to play but sits on the bench because the coach doesn’t think he can play, and Hobbs refuses to be anything but himself in order to prove that he belongs in the game.
So after a good part of the season is gone, Hobbs is still on the bench, the team is almost hopelessly behind, and Hobbs decides it’s time to scream a little, and the coach checks him out, and he’s a star.
But he’s easily distracted again by other things, and his game falls apart, and then his old wound acts up.
But he’s got just enough left in him for one final at bat, bleeding and obviously in pain, he hits it over the fence, they win the game, and then he goes off into the sunset with the girl, because he’s finally gotten what he wanted and doesn’t need the game anymore.
Go Fred!!
