R.I.P., Sir Hillary.

Interesting that your picture shows Norkey with an oxygen mask, but not Hillary. I read Norkey's book, Tiger of the Snows, when I was a kid. Fascinating book. Later, I learned Norkey's and Hillary's accounts differed in one important aspect: I distinctly remember Norkey writing that he assisted Hillary in ascending the final hundred meters or so... Hillary claimed just the opposite.

I've read some bits and pieces of various accounts of the expedition.

My memory is failing me, but the expedition leader chose the Hillary/Norkey team for what might turn out to be THE successful assault because the other pair(s) in line to make the attempt consisted of two [Americans/Australians/Dutchmen/whatever] and that would just not do.

Then, another piece on the politics of saying exactly whether it was Hillary or Norkey that first stepped foot on the summit, so they agreed to say "about at the same time".

Hm, but the picture shows them at an embassy for a publicity shot, so it can’t be considered anything but?

There is still at least some chance that Mallory and Irvine were among the first to scale Everest, btw. Most would qualify the feat of mountain climbing by specifying one has to return alive. Hm.
