Bobby Jackson, who in 1981 became Jersey City's first black city council president, died tonight after collapsing outside a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Jackson collapsed at St. Peter's College and was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center at 6:23 p.m., authorities said. He was pronounced dead 10 minutes later, hospital spokesman John McKeegan said.
Healy did not know what caused Jackson's collapse and the hospital did not release any details. Jackson, who was in his early 60s, had been in declining health and was battling kidney problems, Healy and other Jersey City officials said.
"It's a shame," Healy said of Jackson's death. "Today, we went from a very good high with the Obama rally and then went to a very bad low. My condolences go the family. It hurts me, all of us."
Jackson was elected as an at-large councilman in 1981, and as the council member with the most votes, was elevated to city council president. He served until 1985.

Probably right about the excitement. Obama, Oprah and Hillary have all been practicing revival-speak during this campaign.
