Uh, the party IS fractured. It’s falling apart at the seams. When the party no longer respects its own vaunted principles and or no longer represents the views of the majority of its base, then it’s all over but the crying. So I guess we agree on that. Either the members select a conservative nominee or forget about claiming to be a conservative party supporting life and liberty. Also forget about ever winning another election. That’s been my point for some time.

Get a grip Jim, we are always one heartbeat from anarchy, but as Reagan said, the best days of America lie ahead, you ain’t seen nothing yet. When Reagan took office, the state of the Republic was much worse than today. Remember?
Reagan took a bullet for us all in more ways than one. But he compromised too. Mark him out on your scoresheet. Reagan never put in a Supreme court nominee of the quality of Alito or Roberts.

Thank you for stating this as well as Rush has. We are damned lucky to have a leader on Free Republic like you. I ain’t kissin’ a$$ as someone will surely accuse me of doing... but you earned it and you deserve it.

***See post #197 for a suggestion on what Free Republic can do about that.

It seems to me that if the majority of the base was conservative, then their positions would already dominate and there would be no need for XXX grading. I do not think that the Republican party is falling apart. It has always been fractious. Last time around I liked Steve Forbes and before that it was Pete DuPont. I am more than pleased with the final result of George Bush. In the long run, we can only do our best in whatever role we play in the political process to protect America.
