80-Year-Old Woman Shoots Mountain Lion
KELO News ^ | 1/8/2008 | Pool Reports

She may be 80 years old, but Martha Smith of rural Fairburn is still a good shot.

She has lived her entire life on the family ranch in the Black Hills and last week encountered her first mountain lion. Smith says she heard her dog bark, looked outside and saw the big cat in the garden.

She was afraid for the dog's safety so she grabbed her .22-caliber rifle, went outside, took a shot but missed so she called 911.

Smith says she grabbed the gun again, went back out and found the cat, "a spittin' and a growlin’”, so she waited to spot the light-colored hair where his heart was, took another shot and dropped it.

Game officers picked up the 90-pound carcass. Smith would like to get it mounted but doubts that she'll get it back.

My sister and I stayed on the farm with my Great Grandmother while our parents were doing something important....I can't remember what it was because I was only 9 at the time.

They were probably at home having wild uninhibited sex in front of the fireplace.

Actually, I hear they have a they have a pretty big cougar population in DC, but they are on the campaign trail this time of year.

Very few cougars in that bunch. Mostly skunks, feral hogs, and a few possum. :) .

A run to death deer probably wouldn’t taste very good though...

There are people out there who don't consider a .22 a real gun.

Tell that to the deer I bagged last season.

Well that certainly explains our younger brother then.

You learn something new everyday.

Iowa philosophy at work in my family: when one of my cousins got hurriedly married and had a baby about 4 months later, my grandmother informed me of the age-old (pioneer) belief that a couple's first child could come at any time, but all the rest take nine months.

Back around 1994-1996 while riding a mountain bike up on Sweeney Ridge between San Bruno and Pacifica I came upon one about 60’ away from me.

I wouldn’t think the meat would be very good after being run to death.

It would be a shame to leave any mountain lions alive. It would be a shame if this elderly lady got ripped to shreds, wouldn't you say? It was one cat that didn't take off after the first shot. No one is saying "kill all the cats". Be serious.

There might be a few people who could run down a deer now, but very few due to too much fry bread. Also, someone would have to get their pickup truck going, and if you know anything about Rez trucks....

I wouldn’t think the meat would be very good after being run to death. No one complained about the taste of the buffalo in the old days.

That lion pelt is going to be flawless.
There’s no tearing with a .22. Impressive
shot to the heart - very nice.

[... a way of life which is sadly dying out...]

It’s time for Ann Coulter to have children. That’ll fix it.

Did you consider how many military women will be returning
to the U.S.? Talk about pistol packin’ mamas. Oh yeah.

It’s time for Ann Coulter to have children.

I will gladly offer my services if Ms. Coulter is willing to give up the single life.
