OLYMPIA-- With or without Seattle's approval, the state will tear down the earthquake-damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct in 2012, Gov. Chris Gregoire said Thursday.
"It's coming down in 2012. I'm taking it down -- the middle," she said, referring to the elevated portion of the span that runs roughly from Battery Street Tunnel to Pioneer Square, which has been the most vexing and controversial piece of the transportation puzzle.
"That's the timeline. I'm not going to fudge on it. And if we don't have some alternative by then, boy are we going to have a mess on our hands because it's coming down."
Asked if she, as governor, could trump the state's largest city and county and unilaterally tear down a highway that carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day through the heart of Seattle, Gregoire said:
"Yeah, watch me."

I think they should tear it down. It’s an ugly scar on what could be very valuable waterfront property.
What a ridiculous statement the governor has made. If she is as tough as she is coming off why doesn’t take care of DSHS or roll some heads at the Port of Seattle for wasting 100 million of OUR tax dollars?
I hope while she’s attempting to tear it down, it falls on her useless fat head.
Let the libs take the bus then.
This is really a bid for the tunnel, Seattle's version of the Big Dig (at the eastern end of I-90) located right at the western terminus of I-90, with huge cost overruns & federal bucks flowing like water into local pockets, and the federal government fixing the crumbling seawall that the City of Seattle has ignored for way too long, preferring to channel that money along with road-maintenance funds into typically wasteful liberal feel-good do-nothing projects.
Infrastructure is the first thing let go when libs take over.
Utter bull$hit.
Anyone who has ever been to Seattle knows just how ludicrous a statement that is out of Gregoire. That’s nothing but a lame attempt at throwing some red meat to a group of potential campain donators.
That makes sense.
Agreed.
Sounds like son of Big Dig.
Big Dig achieved its primary mission of transfering taxpayer dollars to politically well positioned unions and contractors.
How much have Bechtel and construction unions donated to Fraudoire?
Ms. Gregoire ... Tear Down This Road.
Everytime I think about the Washington State governor’s election, I am reminded of the Chris Farley movie, Black Sheep.

This woman is an idiot. The Viaduct should come down when the earthquake hits.....then rebuilt with low interest FEMA money
I saw it twice also.
But she might lose the 138-odd liberal "votes" that put her tally over the top in the last of the recounts (the ones where they kept saying "Oh my gosh, lookee here, here's another bag we missed on the last count.").
