Romney's Woman Trouble and More (Gender Gaps)

January 04, 2008 Iowa: Romney's Women Trouble and More

[Margie Omero is President of Momentum Analysis, a Democratic polling firm based in Washington, DC.]

Gender played a huge role in the Iowa caucuses yesterday...on the Republican side. Mike Huckabee's sizable lead over Mitt Romney came largely from women. According to exit polls from both the Democratic and Republican caucuses, 40% of women voted for Huckabee and 24% for Romney. Among men, Huckabee and Romney are nearly tied (29% and 26%, respectively). ...

In the Democratic caucus, the pattern is far less dramatic. Yes, Clinton does fare better with women than she does with men. This is likely because of turnout efforts by EMILY's List and the Clinton campaign to bring more women to caucus for the first time. She fared much better than Edwards among first-time caucus goers, although not as well as Obama, who also fought to increase new turnout (among first-timers: 41% Obama, 29% Clinton, 18% Edwards). Ultimately, Obama bested Clinton across gender.

1st nail in coffin for Hillary. Got to love it.

Hillary was not giving interviews unless she had the questions in advance.

I guess the press could care less now. Hill Rodhog wont be able to buy an interview now.

I’ve wondered where the Democrat GLBT vote went.

Every GOP candidate does worse with women, except for Huckabee - why???

Is is just because they’re more likely to be religious, therefore more likely to be Huck supporters?

“Every GOP candidate does worse with women, except for Huckabee - why???”

I’m guessing it’s because so many women want someone to take care of them, and Huckabee is a kindly-spoken man who promises to make government their daddy.

Probably for the same reason that so many liberals like Obama. He promises to do everything, for everyone.

Some folks love a nanny.

I have a bad feeling about Huckabee too. Reminds me of Jimmy Carter.

He says hes a Reagan man... but his history and the facts say otherwise.

If the next president is hell bent on driving the economy into the ditch, I prefer it be a Democrat. Its their specialty.
