Romney Ahead in Wyoming

CASPER, Wyo. — Mitt Romney grabbed the early lead in Wyoming’s Republican caucuses Saturday as the state had its brief moment in the political spotlight sandwiched between attention-getting contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The former Massachusetts governor gained the first four delegates while California Rep. Duncan Hunter won a fifth.

Romney easily led the overall vote with more than 50 percent. Hunter was second with 21 percent and Fred Thompson, who hadn’t won any delegates, was third with 17 percent. Results were expected throughout the day.

Well, sort of. Wyoming is somewhere between 13 and 15% Mormon. It’s nowhere near the advantage that Huckabee had in Iowa. The Romneys have been spending a lot of time in our state (relatively). Same thing with the Hunters. I’m not surprised to see them doing well. I like both! :)

I was really excited, as this was the first primary I’ve participated in. It’s been kind of fun to see some media attention given to our state, even if it’s only half-baked.

And while it’s true that the leaders all visited Wyoming, it’s important to note that Wyoming had traditionally rivaled Utah as the most strongly Republican state in the Union. I believe we split that with them in 2000 and 2004 in voting for Bush by percentage. We’re real conservatives out here, and if you’ve noticed, the three real conservatives left in this race are getting all the votes! :)

Lynne Hunter is from Wyoming (or at least lived here), so that might help Duncan some, too. I’m glad to see him doing well.

It’s great that the Mountain West finally at least gets a voice in the nomination process. We’re normally just ignored.

2. a sudden, usually marked loss of bodily function due to rupture or occlusion of a blood vessel.

I had to look it up to see if it was strong enough. It works!

And I don’t claim him!!!

How’s the water, by the way? You are downstream you know

I have heard there are signs in Lander restrooms that say "Flush the toilet, Riverton needs the water." :-)

I agree with you. McCain/Huckabee/Rudy are MSM favorites. Why? Although quite different, they have one major thing in common - they support illegal aliens and amnesty. NcCain and Huckabee also draw away support from Thompson and Hunter, the two most conservative candidates. Any candidate that supports open borders or amnesty would be a disaster for this country - yet every Democratic candidate supports this. If McCain, Huckabee or Rudy were to get the nomination, it would removed the immigration debate from the general election, as stated well by poster Travis McGee.

FYI, the live update thread for Wyoming shows Romney with 5 of the 12 delegates committed, Thompson 1 and Hunter 1.

Wyoming is not predominant Mormon so that is not influential. Additionally, two of the 5 Romney delegates won were on the east side of what is a very wide state, on the opposite side from Utah.

It’s a generically very conservative state and Dick Cheney was its Congressman for many years. The Romney team worked hard in Wyoming, as it is in all states, not slighting any Americans.

The caucus is not over year. Romney still needs 1 more delegate to be outright victorious in that 6 of the 12 would preclude any other candidate having more.

Romney’s platform IS about change....

On September 18, 2007, Governor Mitt Romney released his Strategy for a Stronger America, a 68-page compilation of his policy proposals to bring conservative change to Washington and meet the new generation of challenges confronting our nation.

In the Introduction of the document, Governor Romney lists some fundamental principles he would use to guide his decisions as President to meet the challenges facing our country:

• Our military superiority cannot be compromised
• Our government must remain federalist and governing should be conducted as close to the people as possible. Washington today is not the solution, it is part of the problem
• Money and resources are best used when they remain in the hands of the people. A competitive America is one where taxes are low and government is small
• Free market principles built the American economy. Unleashing the power of free markets is key to our economic future
• Culture determines the strength of a nation. American values must be cherished and developed in each generation
• Government should be accountable and transparent. Government service is a privilege and government officials should be held to the highest ethical standards

"...it’s important to note that Wyoming had traditionally rivaled Utah as the most strongly Republican state in the Union."

Which clearly explains Giuliani's exceptionally strong showing thus far in Wyoming.....lol

Correction. The WYGOP site just updated. Romney has won a 6th delegate.

That makes 6 of 12 won with Hunter having 1 and Thompson 1. No other candidate can therefore win more than Romney and I will go out on a limb and call Wyoming for Romney. :)

Judging from these results, if the rest of the country were more like Wyomingans, we would be doing fine.

There’s not really the same evangelical factor in Wyoming, though.

There are twice as many Catholics as Baptists here. Lutherans, Episcopalians, and Presbyterians are about 20% of the state, and (I’m in this group) we don’t jump at the evangelical label.

I guess it’s hear, and lots of people go to church here. But it’s not going to be a solid block like you saw in Iowa or would probably see in some place like Alabama.
