Former NH Congressman Bass re-endorses McCain
Boston Globe ^ | 1/4/08 | James Pindell

Posted on 01/04/2008 2:31:34 PM PST by Norman Bates

Former six-term New Hampshire Congressman Charlie Bass endorsed John McCain today just as he had during McCain's race for president in 2000.

(snip)

"Our nation needs a leader with the strength, experience, and character to lead as commander in chief from day one and John McCain is that leader," said Bass in a statement. "John McCain is the only candidate with the proven national security experience vital to confronting the challenges facing our nation, and that's why I am proud to support him for president."

Folks get to decide. It’s not a hard decision. Either last year’s fight over McCain’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform mattered, or it was an exercise in petulance and no one cares about amnesty.

With McCain, there is no other question involved.

Except that McCain is committed to border security first. That’s the difference.

Michael Medved came out for McCain on his radio show today. Compared to some of the others, McCain is starting to look pretty good.

Bullfeathers. Duncan Hunter has the strongest record on national security and defense. I'm sick and tired of the Republican establishment types and their deliberate assassination of the Hunter candidacy.

No. He is not. During the debate he was given a chance to vote for an amendment that would implement the enforcement provisions of the McCain Amnesty Package FIRST before his “McCain illegals path to citizenship” and his “McCain guest worker program” and he VOTED NAY. He was given the chance to do that.

He said no. Why? Because he is committed to compromise with the Democrats on the subject. He Supports Amnesty. He will NOT force illegals to go home. He will not support state efforts to make employment of illegal itself an illegal act.

No, he does not support enforcement first. He LED the Comprehensive Immigration Reform effort last year. You know it. He knows it. The combined effort of EVERY IOTA OF GOP BASE energy was required to stop him, and he spit in their face every step of that battle.

And now he tries to posture as one of that very base?

The choice is very clear. Last year’s battle and victory meant something, or it was petulance and pointless and McCain is to be rewarded for trying to ram amnesty down the base’s throat.

That is what you’re supporting.

How is praising McCain’s national security experience “assassinating” Hunter’s candidacy? I think everyone likes Hunter and sees that he does have a credible experience as well - this is an endorsement, meant to praise McCain - keep that in mind.

Securing the border first is now a part of his plank. He has declared his committment many times since the CIR debate crashed last summer. What good is a campaign if one is not going to stand by his platform, McCain as well as anyone else?

The CIR bill McCain pushed for did fail and I think was a mistake. However, I would add that there were GOP attempts for increased security in the bill and that the vast majority of the terminal amendments were added by the dems.

When someone says McCain is the only candidate with national security experience, that's 1) a damned lie, and 2) specifically and pointedly excludes the man who actually has the most knowledge and experience: Hunter.

I might add that McCain's stand on immigration, and his opposition to waterboarding, actually threatens national security.

Other than his war record, McCain has no qualities which should impress any conservative Republican.

Basically, he likes his stand on the WOT and respects him for standing up for what he believes, even if some of his stands were unpopular (Medved said he disagrees with McCain on some issues).

He also likes the fact that he voted against big spending bills and got in the face of the GOP on earmarks and spending in general.

Bass was just on Fox news talking about his endorsement and said the main reasons were Climate Change and Campaign finance reform. Wow, perhaps Al Gore should run as the a republican.

I agree. Of the present candidates, Hunter has the strongest record.

McCain is confused and unstable. While he has some good days, he has too many bad ones. His support of illegal aliens and amnesty make him a disaster when it comes to WOT. It proves the best interest of this country are not his top priority. Then there is his CFR, the Keating sandal, adultery, etc. He makes me think of the Manchurian Candidate.

Wow. Of all issues to endorse a candidate for, those are what matters to him? And this guy used to be my congressman.
