Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said Friday that GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's victory in the Iowa caucuses shows that Christian conservatives still have considerable influence.
Huckabee easily defeated second-place finisher Mitt Romney in Iowa Thursday thanks to a wave of support from evangelical Christians.
"The results of the Iowa caucuses reveal that conservative Christians remain a powerful force in American politics. That had to be a great shock to those on the far left," Dobson said in a written release.
Dobson criticized what he called media elites, saying they had written off religious conservatives.
Huckabee's victory "was evidence of an energized and highly motivated conservative community," Dobson said. "Not bad for a supposed bunch of demoralized, depressed, disillusioned and disengaged Reaganites."
Dobson said he has not endorsed Huckabee and said the former Arkansas governor may not win the GOP nomination.
In the next test, the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, Christian conservatives are expected to be less of a force than they were in Iowa.
Not flawed at all. Just different. There are similar factions that are issue oriented while not fully embracing Conservatism. Are social conservatives any less valid that libertarians?.
Where the fault lies is in expecting the Christians to vote for a conservative who is lacking on their issues.
That’s a neat trick. Post something abusive enough to have it deleted and then when it is removed, cry about how innocuous and innocent it was.
I think your issue is with the mods who hit the button, not me.
True, and a good clarification. Thx for posting.
True, and sad.
Oh, me too, by all means, but the two are not mutually exclusive. I do not personally support Huckabee, but I can certainly understand the reasons behind the Christians backing him. They simply have no where else to go.
With the exception of Hunter, every other candidate is against them in one way or another. The choice made, Huckabee, is not my preference, though I hope that they will do for Hunter what they did for Huckabee, if Huckabee becomes distasteful to them.
I guess that means for us freepers that you’ll just post & hide, rather than coming up with a definition.
Here you lie again. It was a private email, not public. You already know this to be true, so you’ve gone ahead with that characterization knowingly.
Let the readers decide for themselves.
It wasn’t public, eh?
How do we know about it?
Wipe the stars from your eyes and stop being so naive. If the public knows about it, it’s public.
Let the readers discern for themselves. Thanks for participating. Christian social conservatives & evangelicals will feel very comfortable in Hunter’s camp. Evangelicals don’t appear to be wanted in Thompson’s camp, which is fine because they can choose the Huckster or Hunter, one basically a liberal and the other basically a staunch conservative.
Spin spin spin.
No, my issues are with you, Petronski.
Good luck with your candidate. You are not an evangelical, you say so yourself. If you are trying to make evangelicals feel welcome to Thompson’s team, I suppose I could say keep up the good work.
It's gonna be awfully crowded in there.
It’s not what he should be expected to do. It’s what he should do if he wants to get Dobson’s endorsement, and therefore steal a good number of evangelical conservatives from Huckabee.
It’s the leg of the stool that Thompson is missing, and he can try to sit on a stool with two legs, or he can fix the stool. It’s his choice — nobody is MAKING him do anything, but we assume he actually WANTS to be president.
though I hope that they will do for Hunter what they did for Huckabee, if Huckabee becomes distasteful to them.
***That’s my hope as well. Hunter is the best of the whole bunch anyways.
You betray your real intentions here.
There's no reason evangelicals cannot support Thompson, or feel good about doing so, except in your fevered mind and fetid disinformatsia.
Private emails are intended for private audiences. Or are we going to be seeing you do the neat trick of publishing some freepmails and yet still retain your posting privileges? No, you won’t do that trick because you’re reasoning is flawed, as usual.
Let the readers decide for themselves.
Thanks, I hope so.
“Dobson is wrong.”
Headline should have been, Iowa Shows Christian Right is Still Wrong. You think?
Stars in your eyes, naïvete in your heart, malice in your posts.
I beg to differ.
