Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said Friday that GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's victory in the Iowa caucuses shows that Christian conservatives still have considerable influence.
Huckabee easily defeated second-place finisher Mitt Romney in Iowa Thursday thanks to a wave of support from evangelical Christians.
"The results of the Iowa caucuses reveal that conservative Christians remain a powerful force in American politics. That had to be a great shock to those on the far left," Dobson said in a written release.
Dobson criticized what he called media elites, saying they had written off religious conservatives.
Huckabee's victory "was evidence of an energized and highly motivated conservative community," Dobson said. "Not bad for a supposed bunch of demoralized, depressed, disillusioned and disengaged Reaganites."
Dobson said he has not endorsed Huckabee and said the former Arkansas governor may not win the GOP nomination.
In the next test, the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, Christian conservatives are expected to be less of a force than they were in Iowa.
Is that necessary?
***No, but it is telling.
Do you only vote for evangelicals?
***No.
Do you claim evangelicals only vote for other evangelicals?
***No.
Why do you need to know? Make sure you’re careful in your definitions, you wouldn’t want to upset any notoriously tightly-wound freepers.

It's a flawed tendency. Voting/supporting someone primarily for their religious affirmation is a mistake, if one is committed to conservative principles.

Like you?
If you believe he has not identified himself as an evangelical, what does that tell you (beyond the seemingly obvious suggestion that he has not identified himself as an evangelical)?
For the reading comprehension challenged.
Dobson is referring to the Evangelicals in Iowa as "reaganites", specifically he is referring to those values voters brought into the country club republican fold by President Reagan.
It is no knock on President Reagan, rather it is a compliment to the wide appeal that President Reagan had, so much so that the term Reagan democrat was born. Reagan democrats were and are values voters.
Kevmo: Is Thompson like you, considering Dobson to be a jackass?
Petronski: Ask him.
***I sent an inquiry to Thompson’s campaign, with a bit more polite language. No response. No surprise there. But when someone of Dobson’s stature gets the “I won’t dance to your tune” from Thompson, we can all make up our own minds as to whether Thompson really wants our votes.
Dobson is a citizen who is reminding the powers to be that the conservative coalition is a three legged stool and when the establishment forgets that it should be reminded by somebody representing the forgotten leg.
I'm not a Huckavist but then again I'm not an anythingist with Hunter running as a 1 percenter.
Life is tough!
It's a direct and well-deserved response to Dobson's shabby behavior.
Pointedly: do you follow Dobson, or Christ?
Dobson must not care about open borders
not that many clergy do except Southern Baptists

man...the antipathy towards Christian conservative here is very telling
Just like voting against someone because of their religion, or whether they’re evangelical, etc. It is the right of the voters, however they see fit to exercise it.
...Dobson should publicly disclaim another man's Christian faith, having never met him or (admittedly) not done much to learn about him.
Sorry, does not compute.
By the way, what did Fred do or fail to do to "forget that?"
Who has claimed otherwise?
Amen. These are Christian yellow dog democrats, not conservatives.
It’s a direct and well-deserved response to Dobson’s shabby behavior.
***Fine, then there’s no real issue here. Thompson doesn’t want to dance with Dobson, who has a relatively large christian audience, ~5M last I heard. Hunter does.
Pointedly: do you follow Dobson, or Christ?
***I follow Christ, who is God Himself. I respect Dobson as a christian leader. You seem to have more respect for Thompson, the politician, than Dobson, who’s made it his life mission to follow Christ. When all of yours, mine, Thompson’s, and Dobson’s personal thoughts and emails are reviewed by God, this mistake probably won’t be that big of a deal. But it’s a big deal to you. My interactions with you have shown me that you tend to make mountains out of molehills. Calling someone like Dobson a jackass is spiritually uglier than having a leaked internal email get out to unintended hands. So I’m not inclined to think your opinion matters all that much in the scheme of things.
No, none of these insults on this thread have been removed. But if you ever get into it with Petronski, you’ll see lots of posts that were relatively innocuous get removed by the moderators. Let the readers decide for themselves.
I’m sure in some alternate universe, your post is almost coherent.
That is the very worst thing I have ever heard about Hunter.
You seem to have more respect for Thompson, the politician, than Dobson...
Thompson is very respectable. Dobson's behavior is remarkably arrogant.
...Dobson, whos made it his life mission to follow Christ.
So have I.
My interactions with you have shown me that you tend to make mountains out of molehills.
My interactions with you have shown me that you are very good at misrepresenting and distorting what I say and who I am.
Calling someone like Dobson a jackass is spiritually uglier than having a leaked internal email get out to unintended hands.
You have stars in your eyes.
