Ex-Security Chief Admits Falsely Deputizing Cohort (DLA, Belvoir)
The Washington Times ^ | Jan 4, 2008 | Jim McElhatton

The former counterterrorism officer for the Defense Logistics Agency's headquarters at Fort Belvoir pleaded guilty yesterday to federal charges that he ordered official police credentials for a business associate.

Edward Flanagan, who also had served as a security operations chief at the defense agency, told a co-worker that he ordered the fake credentials as gifts for “future business ventures,” according to filings in federal court in Alexandria.

Flanagan, 46, faced felony charges that carry up to 15 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. Under sentencing guidelines, his attorney said, he could get 33 to 41 months in prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Gerald Bruce Lee accepted Flanagan's guilty plea yesterday and set his sentencing for March.

Flanagan and his attorney, Kenneth P. Troccoli, declined to comment after the hearing.

According to court records, Flanagan worked as the security operations chief at the agency, an arm of the Department of Defense that supplies tens of billions of dollars in supplies to U.S. troops.

He also told an investigator that he had a part-time job working for restaurant owner Osama El-Atari and his brother, records show.

An affidavit filed by a Defense Department criminal investigator stated that Flanagan said he gave Mr. El-Atari an official agency police badge in what he hoped might be seen “as a gift for future business opportunities.” Mr. El-Atari is a restaurateur in Northern Virginia.

The affidavit also stated that Virginia alcohol control regulators contacted the Defense Department because Mr. El-Atari had included a badge from the agency in an application for liquor licenses at two restaurants.

Mr. El-Atari yesterday said he was doing volunteer work for Flanagan as an interpreter at the agency. He said he was given an official badge and was sworn in by Flanagan

I thought they did not have to follow those guidlines any more.

What a friggin' idiot, that's a hell of a way to help Osama get a liquor license. Bye bye cushy job, hello jail.

WTF? Sheesh, all he did was give a guy a badge. It's not like he stole, then destroyed, Top Secret documents from the National Archives or anything.

Ohhhhhhh Sandy, when exactly are you gonna take that ' 'MANDATORY' Lie Detector Test.

((((((( crickets )))))))

Any security risk in giving “Osama El-Atari” a badge without a background check?

I think Bubba has his law license back (it was suspended, not revoked, no?).

Didn’t the Burglar also only have his security clearance suspended?

Correct.
But one thing was 'revoked'. His privilege to appear as a Lawyer in the Supreme Court. Like that was ever gonna happen anyway.

**** Didn't the Burglar also only have his security clearance suspended? ****

Right again.
And oddly enough his suspension ends when a new (possible dem) POTUS would take office. Gee what a coincidence.

I was being semi sarcastic. The Clinton Crime Family skates on everything but any republican gets max punishment.

That's one thing that's irked me about Dubya - his hands off, kid glove treatment of the Clinton Crime cronies and Rats in general.

His 'new tone' got him squat. He should have unleashed John Ashcroft to go the full nine yards against them from day one.

Could Bubba still be seated as a Supreme Court judge? There was some sort of editorial on this matter this week.

And Burglar should not have ANY security clearance. His role in goverment ended when Bill Clinton left the White House.

I would like to know more about El-Atari’s background and associates. I don’t think this guy’s sentence was long enough to discourage other idiots or traitors from doing the same thing.

And I wonder why the Washington Post did not see fit to report this.

It was asked in this forum, who IS he (referring to Osama M. el-Atari). He is of Palestinian descent. Jordanian and U.S. citizenship. His father, Mohammad, has a strong dislike for Americans. The same cannot be said about his mother. His parents met while being driven out of Israel (formerly Palestine) by force, before they settled in Jordan and started a family. They came to the U.S. approximately 30 years ago. Osama, the third of four children, is full of heart and very loyal.
