Goat abuse sparks outcry

After a goat was raped and killed in a Panhandle town, animal activists, police and citizens were almost as shocked to find out that bestiality isn't a crime in Florida.

But it might be soon.

A Sunrise state senator and a St. Petersburg representative have filed legislation to make it a first-degree felony to have sex with animals or promote or advertise bestiality.

''It's true. It's sick. There needs to be a law,'' said Democratic Sen. Nan Rich, a longtime crusader for children and animal rights. ``There are 30 states that make this a crime. Florida isn't one of them.''

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who called the situation ''unbelievable,'' said Thursday he would sign the bill into law if it made it to his desk.

Rich said she was as shocked as she was disgusted when she learned of the rape and asphyxiation last year of a family pet goat named Meg -- who was pregnant with twins -- in the town of Mossy Head in rural Walton County.

A suspect in the case, a 48-year-old man, is serving an 11-month, 29-day jail sentence on animal-theft charges in connection with the attempted abduction of another goat in a separate case, according to Walton County Assistant State Attorney James Parker.

Parker said he couldn't prosecute the suspect in the death of Meg because DNA samples taken with a sheriff's office rape kit were inconclusive.

Parker said he asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement last week to retest the evidence.

But even if there's a DNA match, Parker said the suspect could only be charged with misdemeanor trespassing and animal cruelty, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Yep, more laws! There need to be rules for every possible action governing where and when it's right and wrong. Heaven forbid we should let society solve morality on its own.

Well, maybe if they had a stronger law, they could lock him up for a long time.

This is not a new discovery. In 2005 a blind man had “sex” with his guide dog. Being progressive these days means that everyone should have sexual freedom to worship at the alter of insanity. NAMBLA of SanFrancisco is an example of the twisted mentality that pervades our society. We as conservatives are not to speak of it as insanity. We should accept it as privacy rights. I’m wondering if the guy has anal intercourse with the goat in the privacy of his own bedroom does he have a protected right of privacy?

In the "good old days" he would have spent that long cleaning the tar and feathers off himself.

Goats are people too, you know. This law would be racist against goat lovers. But the homosexual lobby will just call these guys “Goat Breeders” and really not assist in their defense. Now if it was male goats, that’s a different story though.

It’s genetic, you know. Some people just like goats. And how does that hurt anyone? How do we know the goats don’t enjoy it? And if the goat agrees, why is that a bad thing?

Note the logic.

I did not have sex with that goat. Those allegations are false.

The odd local publicity helped bring back about $300, when a man from nearby Crestview made a series of $10 goat T-shirts for sale.

One shirt depicts a goat saying ``Baaa Means No!''

You just cannot make this stuff up without chemicals.

Heaven forbid we should let society solve morality on its own.

Just how do you propose to accomplish this high minded goal? I'm not for government regulation to make the earth green when 2/3 of the earth outside the continental United States is being polluted by other countries and all our press complains about is how America is the reason for global warming and we pass laws that prohibit heavy industry from operating efficiently and at low cost; consequently, we now have to relay on a communist country for material and supplies to fight our wars against them.

I agree that one cannot legislate morality, but we can and should punish crime. You start castrating the man who rapes goats and you can be assured that won't happen again with that guy. But, no, we are too good a country to pass such archaic laws. We need to adopt the standards set by our European more enlightened countries like in the Netherlands where whores sit in store windows and is perfectly acceptable. That's what happens when you let society solve morality on its own. Perhaps in sunday school you might start teaching your children about morality, but after being exposed to the freaks in San Francisco, they will be ready to commit suicide.

That's one of the best lines I've read in a long time. Not only insightful but cleaver.

Sorry, but I fail to see how this proves your point. Crime should be determined by what interferes with individual rights. Whores sitting in shop windows does not do this, so the law should allow it.

That's redundant.
