Makes sense to me.

Women navigate by retail outlets.

"Left at Target, right at Starbucks, across from the PetsMart".

I've attracted many a vicious stare by asking for the address or the cross streets.

Yep, want to give a woman directions in an urban area? Just describe a location by it's proximity to shopping malls. I would expect gay guys to be able to navigate by the locations of Crate and Barrel stores...

"women navigate"

My sisters used to give me directions to their homes by landmarks. "Go x miles past the airport, turn right at the big building," etc. When I finally reached their homes (plus saving about forty miles in backtracking distances), they were amazed that I could simply follow the highway and street signs on a road map to get their residences.
