Actually, Fred played football and basketball at Florence State College, now the University of North Alabama. He later transferred to Memphis State.

He is 6'5 and 3/4" tall - his nickname was "Stick."

He has an undergraduate degree in philosophy and political science from Memphis State University (1964) and a law degree from Vanderbilt University (1967).
