New al-Qaida tape calls for Islamic militant unity around the world to support 'jihad'
January 24, 2008

WASHINGTON: An al-Qaida spokesman this week called for unity among Islamic militants worldwide in a new recorded message, according to a U.S. intelligence official.

The approximately 28-minute tape features al-Qaida spokesman Abu-Yahya al-Libi telling Islamic scholars to lend their weight to support the "jihad," that is, a holy obligation or struggle. The intelligence official said this is an apparent effort to counter some Islamic scholars who are criticizing al-Qaida's violent activities, saying they do not qualify as jihad.

The videotape, in Arabic, was posted on a well-known jihadist Web site on Jan. 23, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity. Al-Libi urges military groups to resist splitting into factions along national or political lines and to fight only for Islamic causes, according to the U.S. government's initial translation, the official said.

The tape does not appear to threaten an imminent terrorist attack, the official said.

Germany jails Islamic extremist for 69 months
24/01/2008

Schleswig, Germany - A Moroccan-born man who forged an elaborate Islamist plot with like-minded people he met on the internet was jailed Thursday for more than five years by a German court.

Redouane el-H, 38, who holds German nationality, was convicted of supporting al-Qaeda in Iraq and setting up a terrorist group of his own. The group was raising funds for a jihad or holy war, but police were observing them and arrested the five in Sweden and Germany before they could do any harm, the trial was told. The others are being tried separately.

A love note from your local Islamist politician

“You filthy idiot. WE ARE HERE TO STAY hahahahahahhahah DROP DEAD.” That’s an email by a Dutch Labour Party politician to a constituent.

According to the Dutch news agency NIS News,

“Labour (PvdA) politician Bouchra Ismaili is refusing to resign. She is ignoring requests from her party to step down because she lied about signing a petition of the radical Muslim organisation Hizb Ut Tahrir.” That’s the violence-promoting Islamist party that has been banned in Germany “due to its extremist and anti-Semitic character.”

A spokesman for the HUT group named Okay Pala explains their beliefs: “We do not agree with freedom of expression, as we reject democracy ... what you need is a big bomb attack!’

Quite the list you’ve got there.

That both Florida and Washington State have discovered fraud, involving Bosnians and others is foreboding. Authorities responsible for these licenses have dropped the ball on tightening access to these licenses and constant daily auditing of DOT employees. It's an appalling laxity in a post-9/11 world.

The other links illustrate abuse by state workers and illegal aliens of current driver license procedures and laws. Jokes about getting ones driver's license out of a cracker-jax box appear to be closer to reality than humor these days.

Emergency water storage

How much water should I store? The rule of thumb is to store at least one gallon per person per day for at least 3 days (for earthquake preparedness). That’s 2 quarts for drinking and 2 quarts for food preparation and sanitation. A family of four should store a minimum of 12 gallons of water. Personally, I recommend at least a 10 day supply of water and a 30 day supply if it all possible.

Water professionals to examine security issues

Issues surrounding chemical security and water treatment will be examined during a 1 p.m. EST, Feb. 6 webcast on federal security initiatives for the water sector, hosted by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

The webcast, Implementing the Water Sector Specific Plan (SSP), will provide an overview of the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP), Sector Specific Plans and the Water SSP in particular. The Water SSP includes a model contamination warning system, the Water Security Initiative, and a series of response networks for emergencies, known as the Water and Wastewater Agency Response Networks (WARNs).

“Muslim opening prayer at Iowa Statehouse raises concerns”
By: Erin Ballou, Pilot Tribune Staff January 24, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Pastor Steve Smith of the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City is among those concerned about the Muslim prayer. Rev. Smith admits that he doesn’t know about all the levels of Muslim but knows that the Jihadists believe those in the U.S. are the great Satan.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Here is the text of the opening prayer, as transcribed by Radio Iowa:

Imam Muhammad Khan of the Islamic Center of Des Moines spoke first in Arabic.

“I seek refuge in God against the accursed Satan in the name of God, most gracious, most merciful,” Khan said in English. Khan made no specific mention of the war in Iraq or foreign affairs, but he called God the “master of the day of judgment” and asked for “victory over those who disbelieve.”
“As we begin this new year...in a world with trials and tribulations, we ask you to open the hearts of our legislators and policy makers to make the right decisions for the people of Iowa,” Khan said. “...We ask that you guide our legislators and give them the wisdom and knowledge to tackle the difficult problems that face us today in order to eliminate the senseless crimes on humanity. Help them, Lord, to solve the complicated problems in the State of Iowa so that we can be a model to the world.”

Khan’s prayer lasted about four minutes and he closed with a few words for legislators.

“On behalf of the Muslim community of Des Moines and Iowa, I wish you all the success in this year for making the right decisions for us,” Khan said. Khan was the guest of State Representative Ako Abdul Samad of Des Moines, who is also a local Muslim leader.”

Hatred Against Christians Has Escalated in Turkey

By Jeremy Reynalds
Correspondent for ASSIST News Service
TURKEY (ANS) — Turkish police in a popular tourist resort of Antalya stopped a murder plot on Dec. 30 last year.

According to a story published by the Assyrian International News Agency (AINA) the objective was to kill Ramazan Arkan, a priest working in The Church of Incil, in Antalya.

AINA said the case resembles other attacks against Christians in Turkey, where the hatred against Christian believers has escalated lately.

AINA said that the Turkish TV channel HABERTÜRK reported the news of the planned assassination. A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

AINA said that according to some Turkish newspapers, the suspect said during interrogations he was inspired by the TV series “Valley of the Wolves,” a popular show among Turkish ultranationalists. The series has also been released in Sweden on DVD as a movie. Police would not comment on this.

AINA said that the Eastern Star News Agency (ESNA) had earlier reported about an Italian Catholic priest, who was stabbed in the stomach by a young male, in the port city of Izmir, in western Turkey.

The priest, Adriano Franchini, survived the attack, and the alleged perpetrator, who had been apparently influenced by a number of anti-Christian Internet sites, was arrested.

AINA reported that in April 2007, five university students in Malatya, eastern Turkey, cut the throats off three Christians – a German citizen and two Turks – at a Bible publishing company. Before the killings, the three victims had been tortured for hours.

On Feb.5 2006, AINA further reported, the Catholic Italian priest Andrea Santoro was shot to death in his church by a 16-year-old boy, in the Turkish city of Trabzon at the Black Sea.

Then the Agape church, located in Samsun, at the Black Sea, has been terrorized several times.

AINA said that the minister, Orhan Piçaklar, received several threats via e-mail and telephone. Despite several reports to the police, the threats have continued. The police, who on Jan. 5 tapped the telephone conversation of a suspect, heard the 17-year-old brag about how he would kill the minister of the Agape church, and become famous on TV.

According to AINA, the court handling the case saw no need to imprison the suspect and he was released, but not allowed to leave the country.

Christians are targeted on hundreds of Internet sites as missionaries and thus threats against national security. Then on TV series such as “Valley of the Wolves,” and “Black Snake,” “ultra nationalist emotions are incited,” AINA commented. All these actions make Christians feel unsafe in Turkey.

AINA said that on Jan. 19 2007, an Armenian journalist, Hrant Dink, was murdered in broad daylight outside the offices of the Agos newspaper, in Constantinople (Istanbul). A few days after the murder, the 17-year old killer, Ogun Samast, was arrested.

The Turkish police, who AINA commented “treated the murderer like a national hero, proudly posed with a Turkish flag in their hands, in front of the cameras, and boasted about taking pictures with the killer.”

AINA said that on Oct. 12 2007, Arat Dink, son of Hrant Dink, and the publisher of the Agos newspaper, Serkis Seropyan, were sentenced to a one year “conditional” jail sentence for “desecrating Turkishness.” Arat Dink, who received several threats after the sentence, was forced to flee Turkey in Nov. 2007.

The European Union has for a long time protested that Turkey, a country applying for membership in the European Union, has failed protect the human rights and the religious freedom of the very small Christian minority. In fact, AINA commented, it has moved in the opposite direction.

However, AINA said that Turkey sees itself as a secular state with religious freedom.

AINA said that in the beginning of the 20th century, one third of the population in Turkey was Christian. But as a consequence of Seyfo – the genocide against the Assyrians, Armenians and Pontic Greeks during World War I - with subsequent pogroms, scarcely 100,000 Christians remain out Turkey’s 75 million population.

Press Release A080125a
January 25, 2008

Al-Qaeda in Iraq networks disrupted; one killed, 19 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 19 suspects Thursday and today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq.

Northeast of Samarra, near the Hamrin Mountains Thursday, Coalition forces targeted a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq associate who allegedly serves as an interrogator at a terrorist prison and training camp in the region. Reports indicate the individual facilitates weapons purchases and fighter movements in the area. Also, the targeted individual’s brother was killed during an operation Sep. 30 for his involvement in the foreign terrorist facilitation and kidnapping network in the Hamrin mountain region (see MNF-I press release A070930b, “Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda network; two killed, 21 detained,” dated Sept. 30, 2007).

Intelligence reports led Coalition forces to a location where the targeted individual was believed to be operating and they engaged, killing one armed terrorist and destroying a vehicle.

During another operation in the area this morning, two suspected terrorists were detained while Coalition forces targeted an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq member associated with terrorist media and propaganda operations.

Coalition forces captured a wanted individual near Baghdad Thursday believed to be an al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader in Al Bawi. Reports indicate the suspected terrorist was responsible for a car bomb attack that targeted a Coalition forces patrol Oct. 30. The individual is also allegedly involved in trafficking weapons throughout the southern Baghdad region and was reportedly planning an attack in the capital city area. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained four suspected terrorists during the operation.

In Baghdad today, Coalition forces captured another wanted individual allegedly involved in the facilitation of weapons, improvised explosive device materials, vehicles and suicide bombers for use in al-Qaeda in Iraq attacks. Reports indicate the suspect is also connected to foreign terrorist facilitation networks, to include several terrorists currently operating outside of Iraq. The wanted individual is also reportedly associated with another suspected terrorist detained Jan. 12 for his involvement in terrorist attacks (see MNF-I Press Release A080112a, “Coalition forces targets al-Qaeda networks in Baghdad, Mosul; 15 detained,” dated Jan. 12, 2008).

Coalition forces conducted a series of coordinated operations in Bayji today, capturing two wanted individuals and four additional suspects. One of the wanted individuals is reportedly an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader of the media and propaganda network in Bayji. The other wanted individual was captured at a follow-on location and is believed to be an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader of a sniper cell responsible for attacks against Coalition forces. Both individuals are allegedly tied to numerous terrorist leaders in the region to include the senior leader of the Bayji network.

During operations in Mosul Thursday and this morning, Coalition forces captured two wanted individuals and three suspected terrorists. The two wanted individuals detained Thursday are allegedly involved in the Ansar al Sunna group operating in the city. Reports indicate the suspected terrorists are senior leaders of the group and have ties to a network of other extremists operating in the region.

“We will continue to pursue al-Qaeda in Iraq and other extremists wherever they take sanctuary,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “Their indiscriminate attacks and oppressive practices will not be tolerated, and we stand committed with Iraqi Security Forces to end their campaign of terror.”

Instead, the man led police to the Regency Palms Apartments, 4123 E Linebaugh Ave.

“Pakistan Test Fires Nuke-Capable Missile”

Jan 25 01:48 AM US/Eastern
By MUNIR AHMAD
Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistan on Friday successfully test-fired a medium-range, nuclear- capable ballistic missile, an event witnessed by the nation’s new army chief, the military said.

The Strategic Missile Group launched the Shaheen-1 missile from an undisclosed location at the conclusion of the army’s annual field training exercises, a statement said. The missile has a range of 420 miles.

Nuclear-armed Pakistan routinely tests the various missiles in its arsenal, designed to match that of neighboring archrival India.

Friday’s launch was witnessed by army chief Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, who congratulated the troops on achieving “high standards of training and excellent results” during the exercise, the statement said.”

Kayani recently took over as army chief after President Pervez Musharraf gave up that role in the face of Western and domestic pressure.”
