IIRC, the solar cycles go this way. There is an eleven year cycle of min-max solar activity.
But there is a cycle-within-a-cycle, where every 225 years or so, the cycle is not as strong as it normally is.
When the cycle is at a low point (as they think it is now), there is a measurable and pronounced effect on the weather.
It cools down significantly.
Pssssst....I was trying to make a joke. I even put the little smiley emoticon. Like this. ;-)
Yes, so I've heard and read. In fact, dear and departed FReeper Dix and I had a couple of discussions about this while laughing at Algore's stupid book a few years back.
My post was an attempt at a joke. Apparently a bad attempt.
Well, joke or no, what I’m saying is that here we are getting all panicky about global warming and trying to cool everything down.
And if we succeed, it could mean worldwide starvation. Most of the highest producing cropland in the world is at mid-latitude temperate areas, the American midwest and Canada, parts of the Soviet Union, Australia.
I say burn more coal! Keep it warm! The heck with freezing our arses off and eating bark off of pine trees!
Who is "we?" I laugh at all of that nonsense. Weather is cyclical, IMO.
Then again, I don't take myself very seriously and I'm not much of a worrier.
There's just no point to it. As an old Italian proverb says:
If there is a remedy, why worry?
If there is not a remedy, why worry?
Or as the Bible says, "Do not borrow trouble. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
I say “we” in the generic sense, because it’s impossible to turn the TV on here for more than 5 minutes and not hear some hysteria about global warming.
My personal opinion is now and has always been that one single volcano can have way more effect on the weather than all the SUV’s in the world, so like your proverb says, we probably can’t do much about it anyway!
And I suppose some folks actually do like the taste of pine tree bark!
Happy New Year!

Well, I have been told globull warming will cause more extreme weather. How much more extreme can you get? I mean, it’s because of the globull warming they are getting these temp’s and snow, can’t you see?

Mon, 31 Dec 2007 09:35:59
Thirteen Mexicans have died due to cold snap and low temperatures that engulfed the country since October 18, Health Ministry says.
The main causes of deaths this winter have been reported as burns, carbon monoxide toxicosis and hypothermia.
The deaths in the northern states of Chihuahua and Tamaulipas and the central states of Puebla and Queretaro were all caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, Xinhua reported.

Good. My brother-in-law’s down there.
It’s now called Global Climate Change.
Also look for for droughts and floods!
