Calling for new tone on immigration debate.

DES MOINES, Iowa—Members of the Iowa Interfaith Immigration Coalition are urging presidential candidates of both parties to conduct the debate over immigration policy in a civil manner “that respects human dignity.”

In a Dec. 4 news conference, Connie Ryan Terrell, executive director of The Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, led a group of speakers who gathered to “change the negative, public attitudes and rhetoric which demonize and dehumanize our immigrant friends and neighbors.”

Ms. Terrell said this “destructive attitude has permeated our nation,” making the discussion about immigration a more “complex and difficult debate.”

In a four-week period, more than 3,600 signatures from across the state of Iowa were gathered on a “Creating a Welcoming State” petition, the group said at the news conference.

The petition states, “We pledge ourselves as people of faith and goodwill to stand with our immigrant neighbors who have come to the United States from throughout the world. Recognizing the moral imperative to welcome the stranger in our midst, we commit ourselves to support laws that affirm their dignity, preserve their families, and acknowledge the value of their presence among us.”

The UNITED STATES belongs to “We the People”. The UNITED STATES has well defined borders and laws controlling those borders. Those borders belong to “We the People” and we want them sealed by humans, technology and a secure fence perimeter. Jesus educated us on these things when he said, “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto GOD the things that are GOD’S”. He does not compel us to commit National Suicide to help those less fortunate. We are on the verge of giving Mexico many more BILLIONS of Dollars to help their people... we have already given many, many BILLIONS of Dollars to them as charity. We are not bound by scripture as a Nation to allow our own destruction.

"Human dignity" is not advanced by tolerating anarchy and abandoning the Rule of Law.

Well said.

In fact, I believe you can make a very strong argument that tolerating anarchy and abandoning the Rule of Law would produce the exact opposite effect of advancement of human dignity.

Examples are multitude.

Thanks. He says it all. I am frustrated beyond measure over this issue. We are being invaded and every day Hannity talks about this stupid caucus as if it's the election.

No one has taken on the issue of illegals invading the U.S. like Savage - and people call him crazy.

Catholic church is even worse.

They have no moral authority over any one
after the child abuse scandal.

Still they just march on

Why limit the tone upgrade to US immigration laws only? Indeed Mexico has the most restrictive ones in all Latin America.

And what of the treatment meeted out in Mexico to Guatemalans attempting to head north? Mexican immigration laws are harsh, indeed, but harsh is the treatment when Mexican laws are even applied in such cases; need you wonder what happens to Guatemalan women at the err...HANDS of the Federales...?

And their men are made TO WATCH.

“It is a shame that our modern democratic government perpetuates a basically aristocratic system,” he said, “by protecting the children of the very rich against real competition from children of the poor.”

There is the gist of their argument in their own words-- our kids are all spoiled rich kids who we are voting to protect from competition. This kind of democracy is not good.

They like competition just fine as long as it means they can waltz in and overwhelm us with their numbers. But expect them to pay their own way in an ER, well, that's something we should do for them because we're richer.

Well, dammit, every one of my kids has had to take out loans and work their way through college and so have I. These hard working illegals drive better cars than I can afford because I have to pay their taxes as well as mine. And like most Americans, I'm getting damn sick and tired of the demands for more entitlements from people who aren't even supposed to be here in the first place.

In other words, why can't everyone just embrace the idea of unlimited crossing of our borders by whom ever wants to? Liberals ideas of a "civil manner" is if you agree with them.

The ‘human dignity’ issue really needs to be discussed with the Government of Mexico.

This article AND attitude should be directed at the government of Mexico... and not American citizens...

Ms. Terrell said this “destructive attitude has permeated our nation,” making the discussion about immigration a more “complex and difficult debate.

Actually, what makes the discussion more difficult is the use of the race card and dancing around the fact that they are breaking the law and usually more than one. It is not complex at all, it is simple.
