Where to find Fred on the internet:
Let me know if you'd like to be on The Daily FRead ping list.
Fred will pull it out. The latest polls show him fighting for third with McCain but Romney and Huckabee are nuking each other hopefully the fallout will be that people choose to pass on the Massachusetts Governor and the other Arkansas Governor.
Countdown to caucus: Thompson’s life awash in opportunities, seized with an actor’s sense of timing EDITOR’S?NOTE — This is the final installment of an in-depth series look by the Associated Press at the presidential frontrunners heading into Iowa’s Jan. 3 caucuses.
Please note that not every candidate running was featured in the series.
WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s the kind of story you could write a book about: A 35-year-old single mother of three is fired from her state job after refusing to go along with a scheme to pardon criminals who bribe aides to the governor.
The plot cries out for a good lawyer to save the day. All the better if he has charm and a commanding presence. Enter Fred Thompson, 6-foot-5 inches of cigar-chomping Southern gentleman. He saves the day; the woman is vindicated.
Best of all, for a man with a presidential campaign in his future, it is a true story, and someone did write a book about it.
Many a life follows a serendipitous path. One event leads unexpectedly to another. An offhand remark alters the course of a lifetime. One person’s influence sends someone’s career in a new direction.
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson’s life has a Forrest Gump quality to it. The lawyer-lobbyist-senator-actor often seems to have been in the right place at the right time.
As a young lawyer in the 1970s, Thompson took up Marie Ragghianti’s lawsuit against Tennessee’s governor and won her reinstatement to her job and back pay. The story became a book; the book became a movie; the movie launched Thompson’s acting career; the actor’s profile helped Thompson win a seat in the U.S. Senate.
‘‘One thing led to another,’’ Thompson once said of his acting career. ‘‘It’s one of those things like — totally accidental.’’
In earlier years, Thompson was the class cutup whom no one pegged to go far. But his in-laws helped shape him up after he married at 17, and Thompson embraced not just his wife’s extended family but their Republican politics.
GOP connections led Thompson to Sen. Howard Baker, mentor to a generation of Republican upstarts in Tennessee, and Baker in turn led Thompson to Watergate. Six years out of law school, at age 30, Thompson was chosen by Baker to became minority counsel on the Senate’s special committee established to investigate the famous break-in.
Barely aware of Watergate when he was offered the job, Thompson wound up being the one who publicly asked Nixon aide Alexander Butterfield whether there were any listening devices in the White House.
His prominence in the Watergate hearings is what caught the attention of Ragghianti when she was looking for a Republican lawyer to stand up to the Democratic governor back home.
You can’t make this stuff up. Nor can you attribute it all to serendipity.
‘‘He’s good at recognizing an opportunity and seizing it,’’ said Thompson’s son Dan. ‘‘He makes it look easy, but I’m sure it’s not.’’
Now Thompson, 65, has decided he wants to be president. And he’s out to do it his own low-key way, entering the race long after other candidates left the starting gate, trotting along while others gallop, and stumbling at times.
‘‘I don’t do frenetic very well,’’ he says.
‘‘I’ve done pretty well being me, and me is all they’re going to get.’’
I also believe that Fred will come out very well in Iowa. I am counting on all the Iowan conservatives to really give a good look at Fred’s record and stands. They will realize that Fred is the real conservative in the top four. He is the man we need in the White House! GO FRED!
Fred Thompson On Traditional American Values Protecting Life
Fred Thompson is pro-life. He believes in the sanctity of human life and that every life is worthy of respect. He had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate and believes Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that ought to be overturned. He consistently opposed federal funding to promote or pay for abortion and supported the Partial Birth Abortion Act, the Child Custody Protection Act, and President Reagan’s “Mexico City policy. While Fred Thompson supports adult stem cell research, he opposes embryonic stem cell research. He also opposes human cloning.
Supporting Marriage
Fred Thompson believes marriage is the union of one man and one woman, and that this institution is the foundation of society. As such, he supported the Defense of Marriage Act when he served in the Senate. He supports a constitutional amendment to prevent activist judges from misreading the Constitution to force same-sex marriage on any state and on our society.
Protecting our Kids
While censorship is dangerous, obscenity is not legally protected, and laws against it should be vigorously enforced. Parents need to be empowered to protect their children from inappropriate matter, whether on TV, in video games, or on the computer. And we must do all we can to fight the explosion of child pornography over the Internet.
Limiting the Role of the Judiciary
For many years, the judiciary has been too eager to engage in social engineering under the guise of interpreting the Constitution. Fred Thompson is a lawyer who understands the difference between interpreting the law and making it. He is committed to appointing judges who understand and respect that difference and who will only interpret and apply the law, not make it. When President Bush needed someone to shepherd the nomination of John Roberts to be Chief Justice of the United States, he turned to Fred Thompson, who steered the Roberts nomination to its successful confirmation. John Roberts represents the kind of judges Fred Thompson would seek to appoint as President.
For those worried about the Texas ballot deadline being today, I got word from someone that Fred has submitted the application and the Texas website is slow about updating it. I’ll follow up if I hear more.
Is Fred Thompson’s Support Understated In Iowa Polling By Kleinheider
Organizational support may give Fred Thompson an edge over rivals with no campaign infrastructure on the ground in Iowa:
John McCain returns to the state today, and there’s a good change he finishes in third or fourth place. I do think that polls may overstate his caucus support in that his organization here just isn’t that robust and the multiplier effect that organizations tend to have will be limited. Still — there’s a good possibility he finishes third. That would be an amazing accomplishment, and he might be one of the three or so stories the press has the attention span to cover out of Iowa.Conversely, Fred Thompson’s support may be understated in the polls…his organization seems to be larger than McCain’s.
ROFL - got this after my post:
For all those concerned about Fred being registered in Texas, I got an email from the Texas GOP saying that they overnighted it the other day and that Fred will be registered in Texas.
Good to know. Thank you!
WOW! They must be reading your posts here at FR! :)

Brian Walter’s Report from Iowa By Sean Hackbarth in Supporters
Brian Walters, a frequent commenter here, wanted to do more than donate money and spread the word about Fred across the internet. So he packed up a few things and traveled to Iowa to help with Fred’s get out the vote (GOTV) effort. He sent me this report on the ground at the Iowa HQ in Urbandale:
Here are is a little update here from campaign headquarters here in Des Moines, Iowa.I arrived last night around 7pm and went right to work making calls around the state inviting people to Fred’s events, gaging interest in Fred and educating people on his positions, and encouraging supporters to speak on Fred’s behalf at their caucus. I had some beginner’s luck as within the first 10-15 calls I made I logged seven Fred supporters and one person said they would speak on Fred’s behalf at their caucus! If you haven’t heard already we have an “incentive” program going on here. For every Fred supporter you find you ding a bell, for every person you get to speak at their caucus for Fred you ding the bell twice, and for every FIVE Fred supporters you get to ring a cowbell!
Everyone’s enthusiastic and there are a lot positive vibes floating around here. Political ads flood the radio here! Granted, I’ve only been here for less than a day but the only radio ads I’ve heard from the GOP candidates so far have been a couple for Fred. We went out to eat last night and on the television we also saw Fred’s new ad “Substance” and we all cheered and even talked to our waitress and she said she’s going to the caucus in support of Fred!
So we’re busy, busy, busy here making calls to as many people as possible trying to get them to come caucus in support of Fred. It’s amazing the turnout here! There are people here helping out at the headquarters from all over the United States. I have met people from West Virginia, Connecticut, California, Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Mississippi…so far! I’m sure I’ve missed some.
Trust me everyone, there is a lot to be positive about and everyone here is confident Fred can make a surprise (not to us obviously) showing here in Iowa. The more people we call the better the chances of that happening. So on that note it’s back to making calls!
Brian
I am so glad y’all will be here with me tomorrow.
I don’t think I could stand the suspense alone. :)
Conservatism Wins. Fred Thompson for President He’s the Man with the Conservative Plans
By Mark (Redstate)For most of this primary election season, I have found myself very sympathetic to the arguments expressed here. National security is certainly a prevailing concern in this presidential election, more so probably even than in 2004. But just as central to this election from a Republican Party perspective is the nature of the Party in the post-Bush era. If Republicans want the party to remain a majority party, as I believe it still is, they must remain true to the conservative principles upon which five of the last seven presidential elections have been won.
There is only one candidate running that has demonstrated a consistent dedication to conservative principles of federalism, smaller government, family values, the rule of law, and the proper exercise of the role of the three branches of government. That candidate is Sen. Fred Thompson, and I am proud to offer my endorsement of his campaign.
It’s sooo ironic! I’ve had a little more time off during the holidays and tomorrow I’ll probably be working most of the day. Sheesh...
Would I have been PISSED if Fred’s name wasn’t on the ballot.... Thankfully, this is no longer an issue.
BTW, for anyone working for Fred: when you do reasonably well in Iowa tomorrow and start raking in money, make sure that you are on the ballot in every damned state well in advance of the deadline? PLEASE!!!

Oh, rats .... the link seems to have expired. Suffice it to say that Steyn, at Macleans.ca, a Canadian publication, on Oct. 25 2007 came out ELOQUENTLY in favor of Fred Dalton Thompson’s political philosophy and its recognizable superiority over other lesser candidates such as Mitt Romney. Steyn likes Thompson best.
