A history-making state legislator is calling it quits after four terms.
Rep. Neva Walker has informed her colleagues and constituents that she won't seek re-election in 2008. Walker broke ground in 2000 when she became Minnesota's first and only black woman ever elected to the Legislature.
In separate December letters to fellow lawmakers and district residents, the Minneapolis Democrat said she wanted to turn her focus to something else but she hasn't settled on precisely what.
Already, one candidate has launched a campaign to replace her. Community organizer Farheen Hakeem on Wednesday announced her campaign for the Green Party's nomination.
Maybe I should move to MN and campaign. Do they allow 22 year olds to run?
Gee, what a lovely anti-American asshat.
Yes.
For the legislature ? I would think you’d be OK. Average age for the State Houses are about 21. Senate, 25. Residency, I’m not sure what the minimum requirements are.
just what we need in MN- another “community activist” legislator.
to her credit, at least she’s not legislating for a lifetime.
Pioneering? Give me a break. There are plenty of black women legislators.
If I run for office will they hail me as a “pioneer” for being the first Celtic-American male, father of five, raised in Southern California to run for office in South Western Sacramento County?
Or how about we cut all that irrelevant label crap, and refer to each other as Americans running and serving as equals?
In Minnesota.
In Minnesota ? 15 minutes of residency will get you the right to vote.
Then you missed my point.
There’s usually different requirements for voting vs. running for office.
The focus of my posting this thread isn’t on Ms. Walker, so much as it is on Ms. Hakeem. If she were the DFL candidate in this district (think Keith Ellison) she’d win in a landslide. Luckily, she’s running with the greenies and will have a tough time getting elected. The pubbies in this district will get even less votes than Ms. Hakeem.
Not really! The Camp Wellstone group trains folks and they are winning campaigns right and left! (no Pun Intended)
South Minneapolis is solid DFL, which was Wellstone’s party affiliation. The DFL will retain this seat.
