Norwegian Cruise Ship Hits Iceberg in Antarctic
The Associated Press ^ | December 29, 2007

A Norwegian cruise ship carrying some 300 people lost engine power during an electrical outage and struck an Antarctic glacier, smashing a lifeboat but causing no injuries...

The MS Fram hit the ice late Friday near Browns Bluff in the Antarctic... The engine started again and the liner continued to King George Island for an inspection.

"We hit a glacier. We have damage to a starboard lifeboat and a little bit forward," ... the ship apparently suffered no serious damage.

Hansen said the power outage lasted 40 to 50 minutes and sent the vessel adrift against the glacier, where it spent "a few minutes" bumping up against the wall of ice before power was restored.

The Fram anchored before midday near Chile's Eduardo Frei base in an ice-free area west of King George Island.

On Nov. 24 another cruise vessel, the MS Explorer hit an iceberg and sank hours later.

I was just wondering if you could tell me why they didn’t drop anchor when they lost power. Is that not a possibility on a big boat?

Water probably too deep. And for a good anchorage the rule is a scope of anchor chain 7 x the depth of water.

Anchors can be a ship savers on some limited occasions.
I was on the bow of a tanker leaving locks in the Panama canal when the suction of an adjacent ship sent us toward a collision. We had really cheap and lousy radios but not being asleep up there I assumed the crackle & static was an order to let go the anchor. I let go the correct anchor and brought it back in just right to straighten us out.
Got myself a promotion and a transfer to a new ship.

And I never tell sea stories where I screwed up.

It’s worse than that: “Norwegian” Cruiselines was founded in Miami, and is currently owned by a Singapore firm.

Except Norwegian Cruiselines are Norwegian. (Actually I just doublechecked... I may have been led to a false presumption from another comment... It’s not Norwegian Cruise lines, but A Norwegian cruise line, isn’t it?

“The media can not even find Norway on a map.”

They don’t have a template on Norway yet. Norway doesn’t fit their anti Bush/America losing the war in Iraq template.

Does anybody at the Associated Press understand the difference between an Iceberg and a Glacier?

A glacier is simply a land-based iceberg.

I be you have seen it all. I would like to set down for a cup of coffee with someone like you one day. I lived in Corpus Christi as a young man and fell in love with the sea and the ships. I’ve spent my life on dry land, but at age 37, if I had to make a career change, I’d like for it to be on or around the sea.

Texas has a maritime school where you can get your deck or engine license (I think they still do, Texas A & M). You are certainly young enough. There were age and marital status requirements when I went to an academy (40 years ago). Not sure how employment opportunities are this days. Very cyclical business, typically follows wars.

I’ve been to Corpus Christi a number of times. Bunch of us went ashore & had beers & deep fried alligator there.

Very cool life you’ve had. I’m self-employed now and don’t think things will change, but if they did I might look in that direction. Hope 2008 is a great year for you!

Thanks for the information.

..it’s got no control over where it’s going, and if it drifts into a glacier, there’s not a whole lot they can do about it.....Whata mean, They got Oars &/ Paddles (*music* "row, row, row your boat..." */Music*)....don't they?

Agrhhh! :D

Actually, this particular ship is part of the Hurtigruten Line which operates mainly along the Norwegian coast.

Headline says iceberg — article says glacier. Not the same thing, until the glacier calves. Icebergs can be the spawn of glaciers.
