DA Criticized Over Affectionate Emails Seeks Re-election

Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal is rejecting calls by the county Republican Party to give up his 2008 re-election campaign.

His party's request came because of a scandal over affectionate e-mails Rosenthal sent to his secretary.

Fifteen members of the Harris County Republican party's Advisory Committee voted unanimously yesterday to urge Rosenthal to withdraw from the March 4 GOP primary.

Harris County Republican Chairman Jared Woodfill says Rosenthal had made a serious error in judgment and called the e-mails horrible.

Woodfill says they've contacted about 10 potential candidates. He refused to name the potential candidates but said he is certain one or more challengers will register before Wednesday's deadline.

E-mails from Rosenthal to his secretary, Kerry Stevens, surfaced last week as part of a federal civil rights lawsuit.

They contain the phrase "I love you'' more than a dozen times, and Rosenthal asks Stevens to let him hold her.

"The very next time I see you, I want to kiss you behind your right ear,'' Rosenthal wrote Stevens in an e-mail dated Aug. 10, 2007.

This is the same Rosenthal that ordered police to arrest anyone in Harris County in possession of a handgun in their vehicle, and that he would prosecute, in spite of a change in Texas law which lifted the burden of proof off of the person in possession. Clearly trying to intimidate law-abiding people.

His recent problems are karma.

Yuck! Not good PR. I’m feel great symphathy for this man’s wife and children. He should be shunned by the community, shunned by his political party, and shunned by his peers and subordinates.

He has apparently wielded his power for so long that he now thinks he is God, and not answerable to anyone.

Here is the Chronicle version:

Harris County GOP asks Rosenthal to step aside; DA refuses

Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal bluntly rejected the local Republican Party leadership's request Sunday night that he abandon his 2008 re-election campaign because of the scandal over personal e-mails he sent to his executive secretary on government computers.

"What part of 'no' don't you understand?" Rosenthal asked party chairman Jared Woodfill, according to County Judge Ed Emmett, who attended the emergency meeting.

...

The scandal arose last week when some of Rosenthal's e-mails surfaced in a federal lawsuit by two men who say they were abused by county sheriff's deputies because they videotaped deputies serving a warrant.

In several 2007 e-mails, Rosenthal declared his affection for his executive secretary, Kerry Stevens. Rosenthal is married. He acknowledged that he had an affair with Stevens years ago during his prior marriage and has denied that their romance has been rekindled.

Also, Rosenthal on Sunday night told Advisory Committee members that all of the controversial material in the e-mails has been disclosed and that no surprises remain, according to Emmett.

So Chuck had an affair with Stevens years ago during a prior marriage and now has her working as his executive secretary? And nobody stopped him? Not even his new wife?

Rosenthal is going to find it a very lonely campaign trail.

He can spend his war chest on consultants (mercenaries who will take anyone’s money), mass literature mailings (likely to be trashed without being read), annoying auto-dialer calls (to be hung up on as soon as his name is mentioned) and media advertising (won’t buy any earned media positive press though), but he will be persona non grata at every Republican club in the county.

Grassroots volunteers won’t go near him. Neither will most donors (except for vested interests that don’t care if they are associated with him.)

Rosenthal will eventually admit to himself that he is done, but it might take a few very loud booing sessions at the upcoming candidate forums.
