Look up the word ‘aspire’ and then think about it. Everyone should ‘aspire’ to be a citizen. It doesn’t mean we just give it to them.

Sounds like a reasonable position to me. Fred is not saying that he would guarantee citizenship, just that he would allow illegals the opportunity to become legal. There has to be a logical, fair way to deal with the millions already here, just as there has to be a way to stop millions more from flooding in illegally. Also, while this quote does not address the issue, I would bet good hard-earned money that Fred would support a policy of instant and permanent deportation of any illegal who commits a felony.

I think that's a perfectly true statement. There is no magic wand to wave and send all these folks home. They might come up with a plan, though, that would make it a requirement that they go home, then go through some procedure that will make them eligible to come back legally without a really long wait. Maybe they could come up with some way for them to apply for a work visa of some sort,

At least this way, we'd have time to do back ground checks on them, and be able to follow them around while they are here.

These are just thoughts off the top of my head. I'm sure there's a way to do it, though--and yes, we do need at least some of these workers here to keep our economy going.

That quote doesn’t count. He wasn’t running for president then. Just like you can’t count what Romney, Rudy, Huck, and McCain were doing and saying on this issue back then. What you said or did before you were running for president doesn’t matter. What matters is what you say now that you are running for president. If you don’t believe me, just ask the GOP electorate. They are a trusting lot. :)

What do you do with kids that have been in public school, graduated, speak English, can get into college based on grades, but can’t legally drive, can’t go to college, can’t work in the above ground economy that required proof of citizenship. The courts started all this dilemna back around 1982 when the USSC declared by knocking down a Texas law, that if a child is here, regardless of circumstance, they must be educated in public schools. I don’t know the national answer, but it does need to be answered.

Have you checked out FT web site? His immigration policy is there.

I’m not a Fred supporter, but illegal aliens are a problem without a good solution.

Sometimes the best solution isn’t the solution we want.

Fred thought it over and came up with a better idea:

You could of course infer that he is now insincere, but I do not.

"Because we allowed ourselves to wait until we woke up one day and found 12 million illegals here, there's no easy solution. And I think that you have to realize that you're either going to drive 12 million people underground permanently, which is not a good solution. You're going to get them all together and get them out of the country, which is not going to happen. Or you're going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that it's unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law." (Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes," 4/3/06)

You dropped part of the quote.

I’d like to see a link to this quote from the website you mentioned.

Everyone accuses Mitt of being a flip flopper, but Fred has only become tough on this issue recently. Btw, there are probably 40 million plus illegals here. We have been using the 12m figure for about 6 years now.

The 2000 census had the figure at 8 million. That was probably a very low estimate then. They had no way of really knowing.

You dropped part of the quote.

You know, I was just about to see the rest of the quote, thinking I bet there's more to the story.

Sure enough. There it is. I'm sure the poster clipped the quote completely by accident.

What do you make of this quote from Fred around a year ago?

It will be two years ago in April that the statement was made. Congress passed HR5344 (or whatever it was) seven months after Fred made that statement so a lot has changed since then.

Anyway, I disagree with what Fred said in the statement. I will point out that unlike Rudy, Huckabee and McCain, Fred nolonger takes a citizenship-amnesty position.

As a point of curiosity, what do you make of Fred's no citizenship-amnesty position today?

Mature reasonable position. He doesn't go into the "deal" but believes we need to do something.

My preference is we issue them work permits and ID cards. If they want to become citizens then they should stand in line.
