Saying he plans to make no changes to his campaign, Fred Thompson asserted today that he needs a strong finish in Iowa caucuses. "I need to come in second," he said.
While Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are both polling in the 27 to 28 percent range, Thompson is neck and neck with John McCain at around 11 percent. When asked if he would stay in the race if he finished third, he said "I'm not going to talk about things like that."
He did talk about the consistency of his presidential run. ..."But I'm going to be the same. It's worked for me pretty well in my career, being Fred, and I'm going to continue to be Fred."

Interesting comments by Fred. Either his internal polling is showing something different from publicly available data, or he shouldn’t have raised expectations like this.
CBS just following the template that was created when they saw him as a real threat.
he’s lazy
he’s tired
doesn’t care
second is good enough
George P Bush supports him.
Think the family will try to wiggle him into contention so the next generation is well positioned?
Yes, because, when Fred isn’t Fred, who is?
There's also the possibility that what Fred said meant something entirely different than what CBS reported Fred to have said.
Polls show Republican undecideds still at over 50%. There are plenty of fence sitters and they have seen Rudy, Mitt, and the other candidates for over a year.
FWIW, I'd consider the source of this first. And I don't mean Fred :)
It seems Jeb and the rest of the family supports Mitt. P will support Mitt later of course. Bush’s love to win.
The title is misleading — they should have said “second in Iowa” and I forgot to add it in paranthesis.
For Fred to come in second in Iowa would be quite an accomplishment, since Romney and Huck are basically tied for first, so one of them is most likely come in second.
Those polls show well over 50% of Republicans in Iowa undecided. Let us see who they make up their minds for.
I did see a poll in the paper that has him second in Iowa.
I think he is just being honest. I believe he must finish second in order to eventually win the nomination.
I wish Fred would come in first in Iowa
Based on this and an earlier quote that he doesn't really want the job methinks he is getting ready to bail. If so, who would he support? McCain?
FWIW, the only poll that counts is the one on caucus day :) Though if you can get a peek at the internals, that might give a better heads up than this stuff that’s being ginned up for public consumption.
Or he's just crazy....
like a fox. ; )
I agree, but CBS wants the headline to give the impression of apathy on Freds part.
This is just another political hit piece from the relentless Liberal John Bently. He’s doing his very best to sink Fred’s campaign, and I do not believe anything he publishes. It is trash!
