MI Attorney General: no more licenses for illegals

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan's attorney general says illegal immigrants can no longer get a state driver's license.

Mike Cox's legal opinion overrules an opinion written in 1995 by former Attorney General Frank Kelley.

Michigan is one of a handful of states in which illegal immigrants have been able to get driver's licenses.

But Cox says people who aren't lawfully in the U.S. can't be residents of Michigan for the purposes of obtaining a driver's license.

The opinion released Thursday may bolster efforts to create a new Michigan driver's license and state identification card.

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has proposed a plan under which only those who are Michigan residents and legally in the U.S. would be able to get the new standard license.

Its nice to say but I’m not convinced that anything will prevent them from getting licenses. A few months back I lost mine and used an electric bill as my sole identification to get a replacement.

A simple concept which libs can't wrap their pea brains around.

When you consider the fact that they are probably voting with the license as ID, all of a sudden driving doesn’t seem like such a big deal.

Will this affect the Governor’s ability to renew her driver’s license?

At least we are drwaing a line in the sand on the local level that Americans will no longer tolerate the Administration’s and Congress’ attitude towards illegal invaders.

Its a small first step in the right direction.

We have to make sure the march is carried onwards to protect America from special insterest groups.

Well said.

BTW, Duncan Hunter is the best candidate on this issue, along with a host of other issues.

According to Intrade, the winner of the December 12th GOP debate was... Duncan Hunter.

Exactly. This effort must be executed one step at a time. Otherwise, Democrats will garner too much support from their dummycrat constituency all lobbing the ‘witch hunt’ term if we don’t do it one incremental bit at a time. “Republicans are hurting immigrants, we were all immigrants once, .........” Unfortunately, perceptions do matter when the public is ignorant of the realities.

America moves slowly! However, it moves....the massive outcry by citizens over the sham "Comprehensive Immigration" "Amnesty" Bill is still paying dividends.

Evidently the illegals are getting the message. Border crossers are down and, surprise of all surprises - CNN actually allowed the words "illegal immigrant" into one of their news stories! Wow!

Here in Michigan—cripplecreek is here, too—you can get a replacement license without showing photo ID of any kind. Sec O State usually requests a utility bill, but some of the clerks will accept jsut about anything, even “I promise this is my name and address! Es verdad!!!”

If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.

Is it just me, or is this Cox's way of throwing his hat into the gubernatorial ring?

I don't have a problem with Cox, but this state needs a businessman at the helm, not another damn lawyer.

Also, there is such a thing as an international driver’s permit. I think it’s VERY important that immigrants, illegal or not (and all foreign tourists), know the U.S. driving laws, so why doesn’t the US make them get one of those permits?
