In late November, PARADE sent Contributing Editor Gail Sheehy to Pakistan. Sheehy traveled with former prime minister Benazir Bhutto as she campaigned through her home provinces. Sheehy had two long interviews with herthe first in Bhuttos home in Islamabad, a second at her residence outside Karachi. Bhutto told Sheehy that she had long been a target of terrorists. She knew she was also now a target of the Musharraf government. Todays suicide bombing mirrors the earlier attempt on her life that Bhutto described to Sheehy.

oops did search on “parade” didn’t come up. my mistake.
I would bet my last dollar that Gail Sheehy was going to do an enormous puff piece on Bhutto with a strong pro-Hillary angle. Something along the lines of a trend happening around the world type thing, and Hillary’s time has come. Sheehy is a huge Hillary supporter.
Say whatever you want about she/he’s take on this but it is well-written and now quite haunting.
Bhutto apparently believed Musharraf was the greater threat. She may have thought that since she opposed Musharraf, that would innoculate her from AQ attacks. If that is what she thought, she could not have been more wrong. She learned first hand that AQ is not a debating society.
I think Parade should certainly go ahead with their cover story. It is an important story.
Musharraf called the attempt on Bhutto a suicide attack by Islamic extremists. Bhutto believes it was the work of Musharrafs allies. There are rogue elements within ISI that are ideologically jihadist and less than enthusiastic about Benazir Bhutto becoming prime minister a third time,
Mush called the attempt "...a suicide attack by Islamic extremists". Bhutto believes it was the work of... "rogue elements within ISI that are jihadist...."
These two statements are not contradictory, they reflect the realities of Mush's situation and the situation Bhutto walked into. Half your government is aligned with the enemy. Probably some of your bodyguards are with the enemy. Welcome to Pakistan. Good luck with that democracy thing.
I think Parade Magazine should publish anyway. Not that it would deter the murderous scumbags...
after work
Some of us miss a story the first time around. I watched a re-airing onC-Span of a speech she gave on 9-25-07 apparently in DC, so that was very recent and in what she said there and in the parade article I just read: she pointed at extremists in the current regime.
Call me a self-centered American if you wish, but my first thought on learning the Bhutto was dead was, “what does this do for Hillary in Iowa?”
“She may have thought that since she opposed Musharraf, that would innoculate her from AQ attacks. If that is what she thought, she could not have been more wrong. She learned first hand that AQ is not a debating society.”
Maybe she found out that Mushy doesn’t like competition and can easily work with Al Q whom he has been codling for years to get a job done if it is in their mutual interest. Or that Mush can operate alone. I believe the assassin was Punjabi (or so I read earlier)
