I’d cut him just a tad bit of slack here. I think he meant “condolences” but just got hung up on choosing le mot juste. He meant condolences, probably doesn’t really quite know what “apology” means—he might have meant “defense,” as in an apologia. Yes, that’s it; poor fellow was thinking in Greek, dontcha know. Why when you have a degree in theology and, what was it, three whole years of New Testament Greek, why, the word apologia just sorta tumbles right outta yer mouth before you can catch it and put it in its place.
