Police said they are searching for a car that was stolen Wednesday night as two children were sleeping in the back seat.
The car was reported stolen at about 7 p.m. from the 3300 block of Baring Street in the Powelton section of Philadelphia, police said.
Police in the 16th District said it's believed that the vehicle was left running when it was stolen, and investigators were asking the public to look outside of their homes.
The missing vehicle was described as a silver, 2005 X-5 BMW SUV with Pennsylvania tags GDF-1692. It was last seen on its way toward Interstate 76 (the Schuylkill Expressway).
The sleeping children were identified as a 3-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, both white. The boy was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket, while the girl had on a pink, furry coat.
NBC 10's Mike Strug reported from the scene that state police are expected to soon issue an Amber Alert in the case.
The parents told NBC 10 that they were dropping off gifts at the time. The family was apparently on its way to see "Peter Pan."
According to the Walnut Street Theatre, there is an 8 p.m. showing of the production Wednesday.

Both parents left the car with their children inside to drop off gifts? Are we getting this story correctly?
Prayers for the children

I have such a horrible feeling about this. Six years old is old enough to describe a perp.
May God and all his angels be looking after these two children.
A few minutes ago Comcast broadcast the alert on ALL digital cable channels (the boxes in the house went to “EAS”). So now the news is pretty widespread. I don’t know how helpful that is since it only reaches people in the home, but you never know. We also have digital billboards over major highways (I-95, I-476) that should be broadcasting the alert. Hopefully PSP is all over the search.

Hi Jersey, this is probably outside your neck of the woods, but just in case.
The family name is HIONAS. George and Kaliope HIONAS.
It’s illegal in CA to leave children in a car unattended. For good reason.
God help them. God help us all!
Not necessarily. There are a slew of bridges crossing the Delaware, and if this was simply someone stealing an expensive car it could be heading straight for Camden (a well-known place for stolen-car rings). You better believe that NJSP has been informed.
Indeed. It was pretty darn dumb. However, until the kids are home safe, I’ll hold off on criticizing anyone, and focus on getting info out and prayers up.
