For True Conservatives, this whole depressing 2008 GOP thing seems to be coming down to something akin to, whom do we want to walk our teenage daughters home from the school dance?

The Crips, the Bloods, Mara Salvatrucha-13 or the Latin Kings(?).

If you want a conservative, then support a conservative. There aren't many in the race, so it shouldn't be too hard to pick them out of the crowd. Its Hunter, or Thompson. Thompson, or Hunter. If you back someone else, you probably have your reasons, they may be valid reasons, but conservatism isn't one of them.

I agree with your sentiments, completely (though I have my own reservations about Thompson's conservatism...). Well said.

For some of us in the Hunter camp, Fred Thompson would be a “bite the bullet moment”—and he would have to continuallly be pressured on immigration to keep his promises—but certainly this would be a better alternative than the “top four”, outright RINOS, each of them.

They might not agree with McCain on everything, as we don't, but like us, they judge him to be a man of integrity and conviction, a man who won't sell them out, who won't break his promises, and who won't lie to get elected."

McRino lies....and fabricates. Why, he even lies about paying $50 American to Americans willing to pick lettuce.....

I can understand them endorsing McCain. He has, no doubt made a lot of political friends up there, in his past unsuccessful bids. Attacking Romney though, seems a little beyond the pale in a primary. What do they say when he’s the Presidential candidate? Never mind, we were just taking nonsense.

I’m pretty much an “anyone but Rudy” guy, but if I had to plug my nose on election day and drag myself kicking and screaming against my will and go against everything I know and stand for and vote for Mitt I would regret it for the rest of my life and smack myself in the face every time I thought about it, and for the rest of my days I would stick my ass out at strangers for them to give me a good swift kick for what I had done.

If he somehow got nominated, and the moderated, and dropped “illegal immigration” in the General Election like a hot potato, then Mr. Thompson would be dropped by AmericaninTokyo! I guess I ain’t convinced yet. But them, I am originally from Missouri.

Romney will eventually win New Hampshire.

Thompson would drop out of the race by facing a humiliating defeat in the SC primary.

What a novel idea, trash one candidate to help support another. Think anyone sees through this nonsense?

Yes, this argument that " Fred is to old, tired " is just that, BS. Wasn't there a Democrat candidate a few election cycles ago that was old ? I am tying to remember who it was. Wasn't Reagan 69 when he entered office in 1981 ?

Reagan was running against Jimmy Carter, a proven failure. Thompson, should he win, would be running against either Hillary or Obama, who are NOT proven failures as yet.

There is really no comparision between Thompson and Fred.
Reagan was highly energetic and Thompson is not, Reagan worked hard tirelessly after losing the 76 primarie, Thompson on the other hand expects things to be handed to him without working for it.

Next to the citizens of Massachusetts, I would think New Hampshirites would know Romney better than anyone since they’ve had to watch him perform as Governor.

I got to watch George W. down here so I knew what to expect when he got to Washington. The only thing that has surprised me about Bush’s presidency is his resiliancy while standing up for the Iraq conflict. Otherwise, he’s been about what I expected.

But I do think the Union Leader is being two-faced when they slam Mitt while endorsing McCain. We conservatives only *suspect* Romney will back-stab us if elected. I have no doubts McCain will stab conservatives in the back if elected. He’s already done it so many times.

Integrity? The U-L must define the word differently than I do.

But Hillary is a known entity, that is ? in negative terms, and we have seen enough of the Clintons in the last 15 years, people want a fresh face in this election.

Bookmarking this thread right here and now, for if Mitt Romney succeeds in gaining the Republican Nomination for 2008, and there is a legitimate Conservative third party or independent alternative with ballot access on enough states in theory to give him electoral votes to win (regardless of the polls), I am NOT going to rationalize and vote for Romney. I will state it right here and now, so I am not seduced by the inevitbable "Oh my, but you will elect Hillary (or Obama)!" or some such other RNC-inspired situational ethics scare-tatic nonsense in the Fall of next year and/or on FR (no doubt).

BOOKMARKED. 26 December 2007

The problem is, these politicians have shown themselves so duplicitous that we have, rightly so, become skeptical of taking any person at their word. (Jesus even said by their fruit you shall know them [yes, I know, He wasn’t talking about politicians, but this truth can be applied to any person].) We cannot blindly follow someone, just because they say such and such. You have to look at their past and use your brain to see if it comports with their present and stated aspirations for the future.

Of course, over time, people mature and change. But, once again, we must discern why someone is changing and in what way. Is it a genuine change or a change done for selfish reasons and/or motivations to obtain something? Is the change recent and drastically or even moderately different than their past? What provoked the change? Someone “saw the light,” had a “come to Jesus moment,” or something else altogether.

I am skeptical of any person who does not show consistency in character, thought, action, words, and deeds, and then declares their “new ways” are the “real” them. I don’t see consistency in Romney.

Your vote, your choice.
I am sure there will be thousands more who will vote for Romney enthusiastically if he wins the nomination.

Whomever wins the Republican nomination, I am voting for them, yeah that includes Thompson despite the antics of some of his loutish supporters here.
