“What if someone bought my 3½ year-old son a hunting knife?”

What’s wrong with that?

A lot if you let him use it at that age

Yeah I thought the same thing. The kid would be ecstatic! His statement covers a lot of ground...

Dad allowed to me as part of his fatherly advice there are certain things that one does not buy for a wife. The rule is, things that need to be replaced anyway, do not in any way make a gift. In his example, he bought her an electric frying pan. I didn’t ask how long he slept on the couch for that operation, but must have been considerable.

Another example - they were just recently married, and they did not have a washer or dryer. “I want a clothes washer.”
Dad ran the numbers, and painstakingly explained to her methodically that, obviously according to the figures, the laundromat was cheaper and they would save quite a bit of money that way. Long pause. “I want a clothes washer.” I’m not sure if this was before or after the Great Frying Pan episode, but he ended up buying a washer. Dad stayed with mom over 50 years and kept care of her until her passing too. Different breed I guess.
