I was thinking of the Devil’s Dictionary. Some very good stuff in it, but it’s hard to keep it up to a high level through so many definitions. “An Incident at Owl Creek” is certainly quite something.

I agree that “Devil’s Dictionary” is best in small increments. “Owl Creek Bridge” isn’t his best Civil War writing, either. He was an amazing observer and a real prose stylist. Gorgeous sentences.
